We also call it squeaky cheese. I usually fry thick slices or cubes of it, my kid loves it.
It’s very popular fried as a salad topping in Israel. There used to be a salad in one of our favorite places where the halloumi was prepared in date syrup, it was a wonderful salad, with sweet potatoes and tiny black lentils.
Wow, that salad sounds amazing.
Cheese curds will forever be “squeaky cheese” to me!
It was amazing. Sadly, they redid their menu and replaced it with a more standard halloumi salad, which is similar to what can be found in other places around here.
I might have to look for their recipe online and try to create it at home.
The one I ate had almost no taste at all…it was suppose to take on the taste of the spices that they sent me to grill them with but once you got past the crust made by grilling, it didn’t have much flavor at all. I wonder if there are different brands just like all cheeses…I am going to check next time I am at the international market…the other comments made my mouth water to try it again! I try to avoid too salty foods due to health concerns.
@Tanath please share that recipe if you find it, that sounds so delicious!
I just picked up a bag of French dupuis lentils for sprouting, I could spare some to cook for a tasty salad!
@AIMR I think the brined ones are what I’ve had but the other sort could be like paneer which scored zero on the flavour scale, lol.
I have low blood pressure, so does my eldest. Salt is the cure for that so good thing we both prefer that to sweet.
OMG, halloumi is a most awesome and yes, squeaky cheese.
Here I like to buy the one with chilli in it, dry fry it (no oil) and eat it all. Ok maybe not the whole packet at once but I sure would!!
It’s not for everyone, but I am a superfan!!
Halloumi with salads, or burgers, or in wraps or most things. Probably not a roast dinner though!
I make lasagna with cheese curd. It is so very very good.
Speaking of interesting cheeses, has anybody besides the Dutchies here tried Norwegian “Yay Toast” cheese? I just had some on crackers. It’s super weird and awesome.
I haven’t tried that but for the past couple of years we get Juustoleipa at Christmas. It is so over the top and good.
We fry it up and it taste just like a grilled cheese sandwich, but no bread.
Wow, I never heard of that!
I can only find it during the winter months/holidays. I don’t think I would want that much cheese in the summer time. LOL!
Excellent point.
Oooh now I want to eat leipäjuusto! I was an exchange student in Finland 10 years ago and I haven’t had it since. Finns eat it sliced with a cup of coffee!
Yes! I forgot about the coffee thing.
Finns will probably eat anything if you serve coffee with it! Dutch people love their coffee too but I was shocked how much more coffee Finns drink. They basically live on coffee, buttermilk, wodka, rye bread and late night burgers and sausages from the grilli.
I LOVE halloumi. I haven’t had it in a while.
Here’s 2 ways to serve it.
For both ways heat a little olive oil in a pan and cut the halloumi into slices. Pan fry until golden on both side.
The you can serve in a pita with cucumber and tomato slices.
Or in a pan, sauté some garlic and chop up some fresh tomatoes and cook down in the oil. Serve the tomatoes with a side of halloumi and pita. Scoop the tomatoes up with the pita.
Halloumi is salty and slight squeaky.
Halloumi for the win!!
Tonight I am preparing this for tomorrow’s dinner, with variations to account for what I have in stock:
Yum!! Both of those sound delicious.
@Renstar - I have plans for a samosa pie this week - similar ingredients! Mmmm.
I always forget about lentils…Jim made a big pot of lentil soup . I ate it for lunch for at least four days…so yummy…@renstar…I like to collect recipes others have tried and recommend…the lentil curry sounds right up my alley…thanks!
I ran into mention of pre marinated and baked tofu from Nasoya, on a cooking blog. Might help with the husband/kids idea that tofu is bland. I checked around town, and none of our grocery stores carry it, but Sprouts did have their own house brand of it. Going to pick some up next time I’m there. I’ll report back with my findings.
