Latest update:

The bar top looks great except for the little pinholes and bubbles we expected. Will sand and do a second coat. Cabinet doors and handles are on (still waiting for the new, and smaller, above-the-fridge cabinet to be delivered). Big stuff has been moved downstairs (treadmill, pull-up bar, slot machine). TV bracket will be hung today. Jukebox was acting up and some parts had to be sent in for repairs. The veneers on the stairs are currently being installed and clear coated. Almost there!

Thanks! DH is so geeked about it.

I bet! Reminds me of casino rugs throughout Vegas…lol…

That’s exactly what he was going for. The carpet manufacturer specializes in this type of carpeting - casinos, theaters, bowling alleys. Lots of their carpets, including this style, are UV-reactive. If you’re going to create a man-cave, you might as well be slightly ridiculous about it. He and the boys will definitely get a lot of use out of the space.

The stairs turned out great! I love seeing the space and hearing what you have planned for it!

Not a huge project, but I hung up some of my very favorite art pieces in my kitchen today, making the space feel much more like my own. Curios above the slider by @Wulf, star mosaic by @sheepBlue between the door and window, embroidered flower (top) and dot painting (bottom) by @Abbeeroad, and needle felted kitchen witch and spoon wand (center) by @PerfectlyBohemian.

Those pictures are amazing @tendstowardschaos and @MistressJennie !!!

We’re pretty close to finishing the building work, we’re supposed to move back into the house this week- we’ll stay on one floor, work on the rest of the house will be finished in a month or so. But even that floor is far from ready.

I quickly walked through the house a couple of days ago, and I vaguely remember not being happy about one thing, but we’ve had a death in our family and our minds are occupied elsewhere. I need to check today whether that thing still bothers me so much.

Today we need to go back and put in the (temporary) flooring so we can put up our bed later this week. They only finished rendering the floor we’re moving in to yesterday, so there’s still a lot of moisture. We bought some “last bits on the roll” pieces of sheet vinyl that were quite cheap. They can withstand the moisture. We’re assuming the floors will get dirty and damaged during the first couple of months here. If not, we really like the print on one of the two sheets of vinyl, so if it survives it’ll stay. The other one, I don’t like it that much, and I also need to do some cutting and pasting to make it fit, so we’ll probably rip it out next year. I would really like to get an engineered hardwood floor there but I wouldn’t want it damaged. Plus, it wouldn’t hurt if we waited another year or so to buy an expensive floor! There’s so much we still need to buy.

I also want to have some of the sanding of the staircase done before we move in, but we need to be 100% sure that no builders will have to go up that staircase again once we’ve sanded it down. The stairs have survived without damage so far and I’d like to keep it that way. They’re nice guys and hard workers and they try to be careful but they are what my grandma would call “elephants in a china cabinet”. They don’t pay attention to things like bits of stone that get into their shoe soles and cause damage.

Speaking of china cabinets, we still haven’t really shopped for furniture, so when we move back the house will be half empty (no big deal, we’ve kept all of the essentials). I’ve wanted an old school china cabinet for a long time. My late grandfather restored antique furniture so everyone in our family had one. He restored one for my grandma which was way too big for our house and had to be sold after her death. I’m pretty sure my mum’s old china cabinet now lives in my dad’s barn (they divorced and she never liked it, so left it there). So I guess I’ll need to buy my own cabinet! I’ve seen a lot of pictures of old cabinets painted in bright colours. Now I just have to convince Mr. Imma. We’d been considering a kitchen cupboard with a glass door to show off my collection of midcentury modern teapots but it just didn’t fit the space.

WOW @tendstowardschaos your project is coming together to be the coolest, most-fun, hangout! And so nice looking, too!

@MistressJennie Those pieces look really great in their spots and really make the space look like a home. A home of someone interesting and thoughtful.

@Immaculata The last bit can sometimes go really quickly even with a long list of things. I hope that’s the case for you! And that you can get floors you really love when the time is right.

I have allllmost completed Phase 1 of my stairwell project. I forgot that I needed to split the wire above the ring on the piece that attaches the chain to the fitter so that the glass shade will hand level! But I just needed to not be on the ladder set on the stairs for a little bit. A lot of rigamarole has gone into being able to use that vintage glass shade and every time I interact with it there is an opportunity to break it, so I will let it rest for a bit. I took these pics before Easter, but forgot about posting them. The busy-ness of swagging the light is not my favorite look, but I am so glad that the light is now centered.

Otherwise I retextured the walls to something love like a level 4 skimcoat, repainted the ceiling and walls refurbished the light fixture, replaced the outlet and cover and removed the central vac port since we don’t have the vac machine and won’t be getting one in the foreseeable future. I also replaced the 3-way stairwell light switch at the top of the stairs and the hall light switch. To accomodate the “new” fixture’s placement and size, Ramon (the t-rex) as moved lower and further away from the top of the stairs.

The hallway light got a similar treatment as the stairwell in order to use another vintage glass shade. Both fixtures are now grounded, a satin black finish, and used mostly parts on hand, vintage parts purchased at a reuse center. I did get a couple parts at a store online that has me excited to do more lamp and light fixture projects!

Phase 2 should include replacing the curtain & rod at the top of the stairs. We use it to control heating cooling sometimes - no electricity required! I have new brackets that will hang from the ceiling and nearly 5 yards of linen in my stash. I will also finally paint the upstairs hall which is the last real room in the house that we haven’t painted. I can’t believe we’ve lived with that color and sheen for almost 11 years! What have I been waiting for?

Phase 3 Building and installing some shelves for that narrow, far wall for our weirdsies as well as another place for seasonal decorating - yup, more ladder-on-the-stairs-time in my future! I plan to use a power strip so I can have strip LEDs to light them (maybe) and put seasonal lamps, and such up there.

Wow…you have been busy! It looks like you are getting to things that will not only make your home more pleasing to your eye but function better as well!

We also hang curtains over open doorways to control heating and cooling. The old Victorian era houses around here all have curtains between rooms and even over old doorways to do this.

Glad Ramon got a new home as well, but hopefully, he can’t frighten people as they are coming up the stairs! Yikes!

I love that you’re filling your walls with beautiful gifts from your crafty friends, @MistressJennie.

I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with so much, all at once, @Immaculata. Hopefully, getting back home will bring its own piece of mind and comfort, even if the house is still a little unfinished. A bright and cheerful china cabinet sounds lovely - the Mister needs to come around to that idea.

You have been productive, @TheMistressT! The stairwell looks great and Ramon looks fab in those bunny ears. Your light fixture is really pretty.

Thanks, friends!

Ramon is the opposite of scary (except to our dearly departed pup, Betty, who would rediscover him every several months and give him a growl. This is how he looks going up the stairs.

Phase1-03

Aw, thanks! It’s much more to our taste and in keeping with the style of the house and surroundings than the one that was here when we moved in - even though most of it’s parts were here when we moved into this house in one form or another.

Working on Ada’s new room. We’re not quite done, but having art up feels nice. Tomorrow I’ll vacuum and mop the floors, bring in her book shelf, and unpack her books.

Middle: Godzilla destroying Nashville by my friend Jessica (Bourbon & Spark on Etsy), Cross stitch by SIL Jennifer, Knitted Heart by @AntBee, Hope painting by Abbeeroad, Bee Kind sign by @lindyv321, digital painting of Godzilla in a teacup by @PerfectlyBohemian

Treasured needle felted girl on a swing, hanging from clouds and a rainbow, by @Harlan, and watercolors over the changing table by my friend Jessica (Bourbon & Spark on Etsy). We tried so hard to get the star quilt by @Edel into the room, but were having trouble with placement. When it hung above the changing table in the last house, Ada tried her hardest every dang day, to pull it off the wall. So that location was out, and same with above her crib. For right now it’s awaiting a new home.
