Unusable corners - place for something decorative?

Did some tidying/organizing of this shelf in my room. I can fully say that my room is clean now! (Ya know…except for inside the desk. And I still need to go through my drawers.)

Next thing to tackle…my closet. :worried: We have a pretty sizable wall-in closet and…I can’t walk in it without stepping on a mountain. I’d like to get it to a point of usability again.

I have a small but thrilling (to me) update. We replaced the shelves in the linen cupboard! So after living here for 10 months, I can actually use that closet!!!

The shelves were ClosetMaid wire shelving, but the white coating had started breaking down and was sooooo sticky. Jim took them out and I tried several ways to clean them, but to no avail. The coating was just not cleanable. So we went just replaced them with the same shelving, because all the brackets were still in place. It was so nice to be able to put away all the clean sheets after having so many family members here for Christmas!

Even little changes can make a big difference! Great job using existing brackets to upgrade that functional closet! Looks neat and tidy!

“shelves in a closet, happy thoughts indeed.” Not to diminish how great it must feel to actually have a usable storage space again, your post just coincided with my annual urge to rewatch the 1996 Pride & Prejudice adaptation.

COngratulations @Trillian on your kitchen being alllllmost done! YEY for usability!

@Whistlefish Looks great! I bet it feels even better.

@MistressJennie NICE! A usable and tidy closet is such a nice little joy.

Today I am working on replacing our kitchen faucet. Not such a big deal, except I reallllllly want to do with without removing the sink which means very little space to work - especially to get tools in to loosen threaded pieces. Hopefully TheMisterT will be home within the hour, so I can use his man-strength and just another pair of hands to get the last pieces of the old one free. The new one should be a little easier since it comes with special tools for installing it, she said jinksingly.

The idea of being able to buy new shelves & just fit them into the old brackets sounds so luxurious.

…I say, having finally (today) more or less won my fight against the old plaster walls to get shelves up over the desk we got my daughter for Christmas…

I THOUGHT THE SAME THING WHEN WE PUT THEM IN! :joy: :joy: :joy:

Welp, it looks like I freaking did it! Our new touch-activated kitchen faucet is installed! And it appears that it is not leaking and that I have also gotten the drain pipes reinstalled successfully. Whole-y heck on a pop tart! Getting the old one out… well, let’s just say that it’s a good thing the new one works, because parts of the old one had to be cut apart to get it out.

YAY YOU!!!

I installed a “kitchen” faucet in the office years ago. Not something I would ever want to do again! lol!!

There’s always something! Now I’m dealing with water leaking in around my upstairs neighbor’s main water line from the recent heavy rains and a leaky dishwasher. At least that last one seems to have a known cause (it doesn’t like the premeasured soap packs).

Oh no! I hope it’s resolved soon and you don’t have too much damage in your place!

How is everyone doing in 2024?? Does anyone have big or small plans for the new year? Of course, some people have already worked hard this year and shared their inspirational pictures with us. I’m still in the planning stage

I hope your water damage situation is resolved @Trillian ! What a bummer, first you get such shiny, nice new kitchen and right after that your neighbours cause damage again.

Our storage unit is almost, almost empty now! Finally. It feels like such a waste of money. We went to pick up two boxes of books today. We have old-fashioned, built-in shelves in the living room that I’m slowly filling up now, shelf by shelf. The shelves need to be emptied first - empty shelves in the living room while you’re doing lots of little jobs around the house = a magnet for mess! I hope to be done with the books by the end of the weekend.

I used to have two sets of shelves in my craft room, filled partially with stuff I decluttered when we were emptying out the house, and partially with books I’d like to keep (books related to crafting and fashion, some dear childhood books, a couple of things needed for grad school). We didn’t keep the shelves because they were low quality and damaged, the weight of the books was too much for them. The space where they used to be is now taken up by the a/c and the stairs to the attic (both weren’t there previously). So I need to figure out where I’ll put some new shelves! All the angles and measurements are odd in this old house, so I’m pretty sure I’m going to have to build them myself, too. With some stuff still in boxes or piles, it’s hard to picture if and where I’d want more furniture or shelves.

We still have to save up for the furniture / paint / floors, so I’ve got time to think about the details  We have some leftover bits of wood and a couple of pallets so maybe I could use those.

If they crafting books are not used all the time, just occasionally, maybe you can put shelved high up along the ceiling. I have shelves above my windows and doors…

I hope your water stuff is all in the past, @Trillian !

We have had some frozen pipe stuff going on. Too much to type, but perhaps not especially catastrophic. That said we’ve been in the positive degrees for a few days, but still at least 11 degrees below freezing. I tell you what, though, you can feel every one of the 39 degrees between -20F and 19F! At least for 90 seconds.

In a normal house that would be a great solution!

This is the space above door 1:

Door 2:

Window:

However, I’ve been looking at this forgotten corner tonight (there was stuff there that I moved away)

I think I could fit a narrow, 1x2 Kallax unit there. And maybe some shelves against the wall?

Our house is the kind of house that kids draw, a square with a triangle on top. And my room is half of the triangle.

What a unique room! I love all the quirky angles! In my last house, my crafting room was very narrow and had some weird built ins with a very high narrow window. It was a huge challenge to fit everything in…I used narrow wooden closet doors for my working space against one wall…I loved that room even though it was a toughie on storage and workspace! And, it was purple!

I got some pink and purple paint samples, I’ve always wanted a purple room! At first I wanted to do wallpaper but then I figured that most of the wall would be covered with art anyway.

I’ve always loved old quirky houses. Ours looks pretty standard from the outside, and by European standards isn’t really that old (post-war) but it has odd rooms because generations of people have adapted it to suit their needs. In the area I grew up in there’s an old farm for sale now, I’ve always loved it but hadn’t seen inside before. Well, it’s great, all impractical old beams and odd-shaped rooms: Je bent bijna op de pagina die je zoekt [funda] Way above our budget, which is good because otherwise I’d be seriously tempted!

In the old days, all the farms in this area were housebarns, with living space at the front, cows in the middle and the barn at the back. These days they’re all converted to family homes, sometimes they even house two or three families, which results in beautiful, very quirky homes.
