Home decor and renovation craftalong

I grew up in a house with knee walls and so the bedroom feels like home. And that lovely putty color. It’s going to white as soon as the kittens are adopted so we can sleep in the kitten…umm…guest bedroom.
But the shelter is on shutdown to an infection running through their cats. So, we get the little sweeties for longer. They are three months now and fun.

YES! It’s so nice when you’re able to hire out some of the work.

Oh no, the green screen is dissapearing!
What a fun crew.

And I picked up two new shades for my bedroom spruce up. I took the old ones off and they were quite sad when they reached the light of day. Our bedroom is kept kinda dark due to the neighbors driveway light.

I’ll be posting the complete look when it’s finished.

It’s move in day!

Yay for Move Day!

I just swapped out most of the spring/summer decor on our front porch for a fall look. Just waiting on one box to arrive from Amazon, to finish the switch over. Then I can take and share pics…

Also, it’s amazing how filthy you can get unpacking one box, and taking down some hanging fake plants. I showered after the gym this morning, and yet I now feel like I swap through a sea of dust and cobwebs. Ugh.

Nice!!! The colours look great. Did they already have the bunk bed? I slept in a bunk bed, too, mine was the top bunk. I remember I felt so cool when I got it. I love the floor, too, that’s the kind of floor I want to get in my craft room.

I, the oldest girl, got the bottom bunk because I would fll out of bed regularly  made me mad. So silly.
Love the bunky room.

The two colors turned out lovely together!

I’m currently trying to figure out if I could put an art desk/drafting table somewhere. I could put it on the top floor but then I wouldn’t be as likely to use it than if it was on the main floor.

Yes! It was an awesome hand-me-down from our friends who also have twins. It’s in beautiful shape still and they gave it to us for free.

Ruby is solidly our top bunk gal.

The girls have been playing at their desks for the last hour. It’s so nice! There are still a few hanging things we need to do but it’s done for today. Transforming their old room into a toy/play room on the other hand…

Sounds like the entire family is enjoying their “new” spaces! There is something about redoing your home that makes everything feel new and fresh…like an adventure without ever having to leave home!

Looks lovely !!! Bunk beds can be so great!!

Jackson had a “bunk bed” when he was young, it was actually a bed on top and a desk area underneath. I painted it yellow because that was his favorite color and put images of Pokémon all over it.

Oh, I was so enamored of bunk beds when I was a kid! I can only thing of one friend who had them, but we had fun playing fort and such!

Meanwhile, on my little corner of the mountain, the railing package was finally delivered on Friday afternoon!

RailingDelivery01

While reading the directions, I noted that there were some tools I didn’t have that I should and while checking the takeoff that the manufacturer did of our deck plan, I noted that an “accessory kit” that will be key for installing the cables was not ordered. Folks, I am so tired of being patient with this. Annnnnnyway, I spent Sat morning trying to run down the tools that I could get locally and started the process of my retailer getting me that accessory kit. Then I organized that pile of materials into type/size, started setting up my cut station, etc.

Today I plan to do the additional blocking in the substructure that I need for attaching the posts and to start attaching the posts. I will need to drill though my deck surface, so I am a wee “drill shy” about it!

Some frustrations: the sales person I ended up with that the lumber yard is young and I think pretty new. He’s responsive, respectful, polite. He’s also not always double-checking before giving an answer - like when I can get things delivered. And then while not deflecting blame, also not taking responsibility. I don’t need butt-kissing or ingratiating manner, but I do need an acknowledgment of the inconvenience caused. I also want an effort that they’re keeping up with the project. This was a 5-digit cost, it bumped us into a different pricing bracket. I think with that comes checking notes to verify some stuff. Like, we sat there at the deck and I picked the gate we wanted after some back and forth because we can’t get a gate in the exact same style as the railing. So why was my gate not ordered or ever mentioned again? It would be one thing if that was the only time this happened - everyone makes mistakes. And it would also be different, if this didn’t mean extra hours over the course of the project with emails, texts, visits to the store, etc.

You have perfectly described a lot of retail frustration these days.

And, wow…if just the supplies were 5 digits, I can’t imagine how much you saved by doing it yourself! You are so lucky to have the skills, the stamina, the patience, and the tools to take on such a massive project. I am sure that your enjoyment when it is done will be so worth it…it seems it already is with being able to use it already as is!

Yes, as I was typing that out, I realized how this is a lot of retail. And I am not placing all or even most of the blame on the workers, either. Not by a long shot.

We have been really getting so much use out of the deck already - in all the weeks we’ve been waiting for the railing. In fact, I’m going to miss the aesthetic of it without the railing. It’s going to look quite a bit smaller while we get used to it, even though I think functionally it will be bigger, because we can feel comfortable with furnishings closer to the edge, etc.

I do feel so lucky that I acquired the skills and tools over the years! And a few new tools/skills for this project! The stamina has been harder to come by and I am sure glad I am doing this now instead of in a few years and that we’re able to do it in a way that diminishes maintenance efforts and that will likely outlast us. I have not enjoyed more than 5% of the time I have worked directly on this deck! And I don’t think I’m going to enjoy the railing, either. One thing we learn over the decades is that getting what we want often means doing what we don’t enjoy, though, right?

That said, it’s time to put on a bra and my work clothes so I can get back at the coal face.

I spent quite a bit of time painting all of my electrical covers to match the walls. I really don’t like them to stand out so the white covers were just glaring at me!

I am trying to decide if I am going to leave the door into the bathroom from my crafting room in place. The cheaper option is just to pretend it is a wall and put a bulletin board over it, or paint it to match the walls, and, the most expensive option is to have the handy man take out the door and replace it with sheet rock.

It seems silly to me to have that door when the bathroom is literally around the corner. I don’t think it would affect resale value (although, I don’t have to worry about that now at my age…). I’m not going to make a quick decision on it until I have lived with it for a while.

In the meantime, time to hang up more curtains and put up a towel bar in my bathroom. There is one there but it is in an awkward spot. Tweaking a new home to meet your lifestyle and needs is a lot of work, but I am enjoying it!

Same! Over the last 9 or so years, when I repaint a room I change out all the switches, outlets, and covers to blend as best as they can with the wall colors. I even bought dk blue switches and outlets! It’s also given me the opportunity to “upgrade” to rocker switches and decora outlets as well as the covers with hidden screws. It’s such a small thing and most people don’t notice or care, but it gives me a little spark of joy when I notice.

My house was built in the 1970’s so at some point, additional outlets had to be added. The owners mixed and matched…some were cream, some were gold, and some were even wallpapered! It was driving me nuts.

There were way too many to switch out the actual outlets and switches now, but at least they are less noticeable when they blend into the wall and most will be hidden by furniture anyway. I’ll switch them out over time…well, maybe after I get all the door knobs to match…ha ha ha.

Oh, yeah. Anyway to make them blend in! Several people who have “witnessed” my household projects are kind of baffled by my caring enough to bother they way I have and some I can tell don’t like that they don’t all match across the house. We all know it only matters what TheMisterT and I think and he has no opinion, or at least doesn’t express it!
