Home decor and renovation craftalong

The painters had to push back a couple days but they’re here now. He showed me a sample where he was able to sand the texture off the wall so I’ll be able to tape stuff to the walls :tada: He thinks it should only take 2 days to do everything so I might have a painted room by the weekend :tada:

We’ve had a few days of rain, so our painters had to stop working. They need the wood to be dry enough, the humidity to be right, and the temperatures in a certain zone, for the stain to dry correctly. We’re soooo close to having it finished. They are nearly done all of the brown stain. I think just part of the front porch trim is left, then they can do the white portions of the house. Apparently that will go much faster than the brown stain. I’m just really, really hoping they can finish it in the next few weeks, and not have to leave it half done till spring.

Fingers crossed for all the climate stuff to come together for you and your painters!

Progress! The wall color is so similar that my husband says he can’t tell a difference but I can and I think it looks SO much better already. The painter should be here in a few min to do the second coat.

All done! The art studio looks great, the walls have been smoothed, and best of all the powder room is no longer red and yellow! I have no idea why we didn’t have the powder room painted when we painted the rest of the house but it’s been bothering me for 11 years - not enough to paint it of course :joy:

Nice!!! I scrolled back to the other picture, and the difference is hard to see in pictures, but a freshly painted wall always looks so crisp and nice even if it’s done in (almost) the same colour. You’re so close to moving into your new studio!

I’m getting closer to finishing, too. I was at a family funeral today (of all places - but the deceased was very old and lived a good life, so it was more family reunion with food and drinks and less super sad occasion) and I talked to my first cousin once removed, who lives in my city as well. Long story short, they know a guy! So they gave me his number and he’s coming over next week. Lol, this sounds almost like he’s supplying illegal substances, but he’s actually a guy who retired early from the military, and he’s doing carpentry and general DIY to keep busy. He particularly loves doing custom work, but he’ll do any jobs that need doing that he knows how to do. It’s a legitimate registered business but he doesn’t even have a website, it’s all word of mouth. He did several jobs for my cousin.

I called him to ask him about the stairs and he’s coming over next week to see the space irl, but he’s interested in the job. If we’re happy with this, there are several other things we’d want him to work on - we still want built-in cabinets in two places, we want a very specific piece of furniture in the living room, etc. We can’t do them all at the same time but we could potentially let him do a thing every year.

Of course I haven’t even met the guy yet but this sounds like what we’re looking for - someone who is doing this type of work because they love their craft, with attention to detail. Within certain limits (budget and common sense) I don’t even care that much what the price would be. The staircase needs to be practical, safe and professionally installed. It would increase the value of the house, as well as make our life much easier.

I am finally painting the muddy tan walls in the bedroom…after 15 years in this house! Sometimes you just have to wait until things irritate you just enough.

Such great news! I hope it all goes smoothly.

Oh, I hope it works out great for a long-term professional relationship, @Immaculata !

@marionberries COngratulations on that! I can relate; the only spaces in our house (just passed the 12 year anniversary) that haven’t been painted are the upstairs hallway and the mudroom. I hate the colors, but it just always seems like a project for another day/decade. I think it’s also partly that I hate the wall texture in these spaces and think that maybe someday I’ll be finally fed up and skim them out, so why bother painting? That old trap!

Today’s progress - got the tool chest in and the standing desk assembled! Still have curtains, ikea furniture and the window to go.

And roughly where the first easel will go

It’s really coming together!

On Sunday, I got to tackle some of the stair railing. It was more than is shown, because I had to undo a bit. Le sigh. The retailer’s supplier sent the wrong size of posts for the other side, but I did not notice until I had it attached (last Thursday)! BUT, I also had made my own mistake: using the wrong size driver bit for the 6"/15.25cm long screws and had nearly stripped them out! Luckily I had stopped before it was catastrophic. I stepped away to get the situation worked out with the retailer via email/phone, then to calm the heck down - I was upset. They figured out what to try.

So… Sunday, I popped down to the local Ace Hardware with a sample screw. I got two new bits in the right size and an exxxxtra long drill bit for the pre-drilling part. Then, the screws went in like (cold) butter! YAHOO! There are several other steps to get this one side done, then repeat it on the other starting the 18th when my posts are supposed to arrive at the retailer. New circumstances require that I will likely on get to chip away at this during the week (see below).

Congrats on the new circumstances, but good luck getting any work done with them around!

Y’all. I started and finished a thing while Vivienne was napping! Well, she woke up and was ready to potty while I was working, but Eric had a work break and was able to attend to her. Anyway, I dug out the spot, leveled with paver sand to slope away from the stairs and downhill, placed the pavers, swept sand into the cracks, and mostly got my work area cleaned up in less than a couple hours!

OK, I am on my phone and for some reason the upload will not go to my gallery, just to camera. I will add a photo later.

Operator error. I had not seen the option referred to as “media picker” ever before.

We’re hoping this will help diminish the amount of mud/dirt tracking onto the stairs.
