I built my dream art studio!

It took about 3.5 months and so, so many projects but my studio is finally “done” (it’s never really done). I’ve been making art in our dining room and living room for the last 4 years and I really wanted my own space where I could keep things setup and with good lighting so I could make art at any time. I am SO happy with how it turned out!

I hope you like lots of progress pics :joy:

Here’s the view as you walk into the studio

We had this room on our first floor that we haven’t really used much in the last decade we owned our house and was setup kind of like a second living room with a couch, tv, peloton, etc. It was mainly functioning as a storage space so I decided it would be the perfect place to turn into a studio. The room is 10’x12’ so not huge but decently sized and only has walls on 3 sides with a large window on one wall.

Here’s the floor plan I created. The studio is roughly setup with all the working areas and working supplies as soon as you walk into the room and storage at the “back” of the room (bottom of the image).

I couldn’t find a good before picture but clearing out the room involved trips to 2 different donation places (creative reuse, goodwill), furniture donation pickup, and a junk removal company. After the room was empty, we had the carpet ripped up and vinyl plank flooring installed (which involved grinding down the concrete slab to remove a big hump in the floor).

Next my husband got to work cutting and prepping this butcher block to be the top for my standing desk.

While that was finishing, the painters came. We were originally going to paint ourselves but the walls had a weird gritty texture to them and needed to be sanded down so we hired painters and had them do a couple other small projects in the house as well.

After painting was done, we hung up the studio lights. I went with 5 of these daylight shop lights so I could get good light coverage across the room. They’re remote controlled and dimmable making it easy to adjust the light.

The next order of business was to start building some of the IKEA furniture that didn’t block the window and hang the new roman shade and curtain rod.

Then once the window was installed, we got the new curtains hung and the bookshelves put together. Here you can see a picture at night with the lights turned on.

And now for some of the final room pics

Storage cabinet. This will be used for longer term storage (extra paper pads, watercolor tubes, etc) and display.

Working storage on the kallax (left) and longer term storage and display (right). The kallax is filled with all of my working supplies (watercolor palettes, poscas, fluid acrylics, inks, open paper pads, sketch books, etc). The acrylic bins are super sturdy and it’s really easy to wheel my chair over and grab something from a bin or just pull out the whole bin.

Here’s the view with my back to the window facing the desk. Above the desk is currently intentionally blank. My idea for this wall is to be able to tape up references, WIPs, etc as desired. The desk is adjustable which I’ve already made way more use out of than ever expected. And a cozy blanket for the studio on the back of the chair

And the view from the back corner by the furnace room door.

And here are some of my favorite parts of the studio.

First, the tool chest! It’s AMAZING! I can have all of my tube acrylics stored nicely and accessible from the easel or from the desk.

Close up of the usability of the acrylic bins on the kallax

My neatly organized desk drawer with organizers kindly sent to me by @Immaculata since they don’t sell them in the US anymore!

Pencil drawers with removable drawers on the desk. I have all of my most used pencils in here. I can easily pull out a drawer or a few pencils and take them wherever I need.

And one of the silliest, most useful parts of the studio, these outlets at the top corner of the desk. It is so great when I need to quickly charge something and don’t want to go searching for an outlet.

There were so many projects that went into the studio and I’m over the moon excited with how it came out! It feels like it has the perfect amount of space both for storage and moving around. I never feel crowded and since everything is on wheels I can easily move things around as needed.

Thank you for looking!

Looks amazing! Bright, functional, inviting. The perfect space for creating, & I love that you repurposed a room that was feeling less important than this current iteration. It’s your house, it might as well work for you!

& now I would love a tour of that rolling cart you’ve kitted out so interestingly… that looks really smart.

I think I’m using every square inch of the outside of this cart :joy:

On the top I have a metal butcher tray with a thing of baby wipes and an open spot where I can quickly set wet things without having to think about it. I also have a couple brush holders - one for short handle brushes and one for blending brushes. Sometimes I pull an extra paper towel I don’t need or rip one in half so I have a holder for extra/small paper towels ready to go.

On the front of the cart by the easel, I have magnetic paper towel holders with 3 kinds of paper towels - blue shop towels, viva paper towels, and regular paper towels.

On the side towards the desk I have spray bottles hanging off the top (one for water, one for spectrafix for pastels/charcoal), a hook for rulers, and a hook for general purpose scissors.

On the back of the cart by the kallax I have a 2 holders hanging off the top - one for long handle paint brushes, one for my water bottle. I also make heavy use of magnetic hooks on this side for things like holding artist tape so I can quickly get to it, a drafting brush, and another hook for my serrated scissors when I need to cut through something thick or with lots of paint/layers.

On the side of the cart towards the back of the room - top: 2 cup holders hanging off the top for more long handle paint brushes, middle: cup holder with q-tips, holder with misc brushes, bottom: holder with palette knives, and holder with misc things like little scissors, tiny stapler, and tiny bottles filled with paint and glue.

The middle and bottom shelves are mostly for things I need sometimes when painting but not often.

Thanks for asking! I was going to include pictures of it but didn’t want to bore anyone :joy:

That is one workhorse of a cart! I love seeing how people adapt things to work for their style and space! It also gives insight to all the tools and gadgets that are needed to make your art…making it easier surely takes out the grunt work of prep so you can just get to it!

Thanks for sharing…those carts are amazing as is, but you have taken it to a higher level!

My biggest envy is your lighting! Fantastic daylight lighting will make such a difference.

I can’t wait to see the art that you produce from there.

So simple. Why didnt i think of that?

I am sort of jealous (or maybe inspired) and have a desire to completely gut the slothcave now.
