Late last year we built out my dream art studio but one thing I never had a good storage solution for were my large art papers. I asked my husband if he could build me some custom shelves and here’s what we came up with.
The large unit stores 18x24” papers and the smaller unit fits 14x18”.
Here are a bunch of in progress pictures and how we iterated on the project.
My initial sketch
Testing where the shelves would go and seeing if the added height would block too much light
3D model my husband made of the larger unit
Cutting the grooves for the shelves (before we realized 1/4” wouldn’t be thick enough for the lower shelves)
Test fitting the shelves in the smaller unit. The cabinets were already assembled before we realized we needed thicker shelves for the bottom so my husband had to make additional cuts into 1/2” plywood to fit the 1/4” grooves
Painting, lots of painting
Test fitting after painting before glueing
After glueing we installed casters and got them into the studio and promptly realized the casters weren’t heavy duty enough to handle the weight of the shelves
And the final result with heavy duty casters (I keep calling them my sport wheels lol), replacement shelves, and loaded up
They fit my space perfectly and solve all of the storage issues I had. We both learned a ton during this project and I couldn’t be happier with the final result! Thanks for looking!
