I'm building a thing! Craft cabinet (in progress)

So I really wanted a Dreambox, but my wallet is NOT that deep lol.

So I’m improvising with some IKEA stuff.

This is a work in progress.

This has been a team effort. I built the cabinets all by myself with the help of this video, because I cannot follow picture-only instructions:

My husband and I discussed what would work for the hinges and casters and he added those. He also secured the back portion to the wall.

Then I added the shelves, acquired a tonne of bins from Dollarama, and organized the supplies.
Next steps:

  1. Add a folding table (it’ll fold down into that open space in the middle.
  2. Add handles to the “doors”
  3. Paint the unfinished portions and create something to hide the nails on the “doors”.

At some point I’d also like to get a few more shelves so nothing is stacked on top of anything else–the whole point of the project is easy access to everything.

These are not all our craft supplies by far, but it’s a lot of them, and it feels good to get rid of all the plastic drawers that were falling apart

Updates (Nov 21st, 2024)

Just for some context for the updates:

There’s no IKEA where I live–the nearest one is 200 kilometers away, and IKEA does not deliver to my area.

I travelled to Ottawa to pick up these bookcases. Since I needed more shelves and didn’t want to travel again, I went to Rona and got some laminated pressboard. I took one of the original shelves with me and had them cut the big pressboard panels into several more shelves. I’ve added these to the cabinets now and rearranged some supplies. I’ll add a picture when I get home.

I have now prepped the unfinished edges with white gesso. It looks so much better already; but I think I will add wallpaper also.

I’m having second thoughts about the folding table within the cabinet. Not adding it would significantly increase the storage space within, potentially fitting all our supplies.

Plus, I’ve invested in a transforming “console to dining table” from Expand Furniture to go in this area, and it may be enough of a working surface. I’m waiting for that to arrive. I’ll keep you posted.

Anyway…

I got on a roll and decided to make a similar cabinet for our board games!

I had purchased 4 of the narrower bookcases, thinking that I would use them for the craft cabinet, but the dimensions I needed only allowed for using 2.

So I’m using the extra 2 for the board game cabinet project!

Step 1 was to build the cabinets; step 2 was to ensure all the games would fit.

I attached a couple of the shelves backwards, lol… oh well, I’ll just paint the pressboard that’s showing.

Next will be:

  1. Add casters to the bottom of one bookcase
  2. Add wooden blocks to the bottom of the other bookcase
  3. Connect the 2 bookcases with hinges, and
  4. Add finishing touches.

I’ll make a separate post once the gaming cabinet is finished

This is so neat! I love that you decided to make your own and it’s such a great way to keep things organized in a compact space. Have you considered using wallpaper strips to cover the outer panels and nails? It might work, plus you’d have a ton of fun options!

This is so smart! Looks like a very practical storage solution but also a joy to use, when you’ve got the desk in. You’ll sit there right in the middle of all your supplies.

Or corkboard panels for the outside, you could use it as a pinboard for inspiration. This is very cool btw

Yay; thank you!!

Yes, I did consider wallpaper and even got some at the dollar store, but the sizing of it would require too many “junctions” and I fear it will look a little too odd/start peeling. I had not thought about whether they sell ready to go strips of wallpaper though, so I’ll do a little looking around!

I thought of this option as well, but I’ve got corkboards elsewhere in the house and they’re not my favourite… but I have also thought of dry-erase paint… I love using dry-erase boards for brainstorming ideas… this is a very big maybe though, as the stuff is very expensive.

So many options!

Thank you so much for the kind words, everyone!

I’m adding some updates to the original post above!

You can get stick on dry erase film. My experience etc dry erase paint on a surface is that it’s really hard to erase stuff cleanly

Ooh that sounds like a better option! I will look into this!

It’s really useful, you just have to be a small bit careful sticking it, so you don’t get too many air bubbles, work from the centre out and use something like a credit card to smooth as you go. Given that the cupboard is smooth laminate, it might be a good idea to rough it slightly with a little sandpaper, for better adhesion.
