Minecraft Birthday Party

My son just turned 13, and we had a party at home for him on the weekend.

For his cake, I made blocks of vegan chocolate cake and (non-vegan) buttercream icing, then put it together with rice krispies and blue jello to make a minecraft “cake.” I got this idea from Pinterest.

While surfing Pinterest for ideas for a cake, I saw a cake that had a sword inserted into it, and while I didn’t want to make that cake, seeing the sword gave me an idea for a craft…

I made use of the copious amounts of cardboard I tend to hoard (and my husband tends to set aside for me, lol), and created a craft for the kids to make.

I looked at a picture of a minecraft sword, then made a template out of cardstock. From that template, I cut out cardboard and pieces of cardstock and/or construction paper to match each piece. I decided to glue on the decorations on the cardstock ahead of time, and just have the kids glue the cardstock sheets onto the cardboard, to save a bit of time at the party.

The kids glued the cardstock to the pieces of cardboard, and then I assembled the swords for them using hot glue.

I put all the necessary pieces for each sword in a separate ziploc bag, so that when the kids arrived, all they had to do is go through the pieces in the bag to start making their swords.

It was still very hectic with a lot of kids here, but we still had fun. And then the kids had a swordfight after, lol!

Here are some progress photos of me making my own reference sword:
