Jag is a 100#/45+kg black German Shepherd who lives a couple doors down. He’s just turned 2 years and has had quite a bit of change in his life, but is now settled in for good with his grandpa (my neighbor’s son died and he adopted Jag from him). Anyway, Jag loves Vivienne and if he leaves his yard it’s usually to come see if Viv is out so they can run along the fence together.
Because we live in the woods along a National Forest and Jag could be mistaken for a wolf, he is always in a bandana, or “neckerchief” as I like to call them, because I think it’s both cuter and funnier than “bandana.” Don’t @ me! ![]()
Anyway, he gave Viv a Valentine and so she wanted to give him something for St. Patrick’s Day. While she has fun at the fence and when they have playdates, Jag is definitely in the friend-zone. I dug through my stash for a cute, green print and found these bones! Perfect!
I did have to piece it together to make it big enough for his big, dufus neck. I pinked and zigzagged the seam allowances to hopefully give it a bit longer of a life.
Here they are playing in the snow earlier this week, before I put the neckerchief on him. It would get immediately filthy and I wanted it to still be nice when his dad/grandpa picked him up.
I’d like to continue making him neckerchiefs with stashed fabrics, so he can have a collection of brightly colored ones that will show well against his fur and I will bust some stash. I learned that if I need to piece them in a similar way, that I need to cut the pieces that make up the center strip on the bias so they will stretch regardless of which corners are tied together. When I made more, I’ll add them to this topic to keep the feed from being repetitive.
And here are the first batch of More Neckerchiefs for Jag just a week and a half later.
I got so excited about digging though my stash for the purpose of finding fabrics for this and to donate to the creative reuse store, that I found some suitable pieces over the weekend and cut 12 squares. Yesterday I pressed 6 hems and today I sewed them. Not sure when I will give them or how - all at once, a few at a time, one here and there? Some aren’t exactly “masculine” but I’m 98% positive that Jag doesn’t have any hang-ups about that kind of thing. I’m almost certain I’ve seen his very manly dad wear pink, too.
Four more days later:
Six more neckerchiefs sewn and ready to give!
According to my calculations, these last 12 neckerchiefs constituted just over 4 square yards of busted fabric stash. WOO!
