Nerd Games Discussion Thread

That would be amazing, and very much more what they are actually after!

Speaking for myself, no upset taken. I wasn’t entirely sold on the idea BUT also simply took it as you getting clarification in case it was allowed. The answer’s always no if you don’t ask, as they say.

Fantastic suggestions!

It’s always great to ask questions - everyone keep doing so! @HeroicHatchling, you’re right, this hadn’t come up before, so it offered an important opportunity for reflection and discussion! No upset-ness, just sharing and respect, which is what makes it so great here.

Swap Mod here :waving_hand:
I think a kid swap is a great idea. If anyone would like to host, let us know! We can help if you need that too.

I didn’t realize my post was so long. So sorry! I think I also forgot to say that I’m really glad to hear your kids are into making and creating! I also always love when kids show up to in-person workshops, etc.

And yes! I also thought that there used to be some swaps for the young’ns on the old site…!

No need to apologize! I appreciate hearing people’s opinions and perspectives.

I will for sure think more about a kids swap and suggest it over on the swap thread. But not tonight. It’s past my bedtime. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

If anyone needs any motivation to get the Monster Mash prompt done, there is a make-what-you want type monster swap going on right now. No questionnaires. It’s like the Grab Bag or 4x6 Art swap. Just have fun making something monsterous!

I’ve already made three items for that swap and am pretty darn pleased with them. I can’t wait for send outs so I can share them!

Just peeking in to say I have never done the Nerd Games but have always been a little curious. For some reason it’s always felt so overwhelming! Reading through the rules, I feel like I was building it up in my own head. I’m gonna brain over joining since I’ve already been more crafty than usual for the last couple of weeks… and how can I resist joining a grooooovy team?!

DO IT! I remember resisting joining forever ago (back on the old site) because I found all the words and instructions overwhelming…
and then with the site switchover and everything that happened / has been happening since 2020, I didn’t end up finding my way back until last year, but I’m so glad for this little corner of the community!

But beware. If you’re like me, you might end up continuing the overwhelm by feeling like you need to complete ALL THE THINGS. Sometimes I’m able to do all the challenges… but I’m still learning that all of this is completely * optional * and it’s okay if I can’t! Especially since it seems like @LovelyMiss is gradually making it impossible to actually do every single thing!

Ahaha! It’s not intentional. I just like there to be a few options - if you don’t want to/can’t do one special event, maybe you’ll want or be able to do the other. Learning to lean into what you actually like and leave the rest is a really helpful skill to find more joy and balance iife, too. So maybe I make the Nerd Games accidentally therapeutic, but it just comes with the territory. Can’t turn it off! Sorry! Lol!

It’s a lot of fun and if you join now, you’ll be able to join the Nerd Games Summer Camp. Last year’s camp was filled with a lot of fun activities, along with the camaraderie that comes with summer camp - I highly recommend it!

@Tapestry has been creating downloadable tracking pages that make it fun and easy to keep track of the different battles, prompts, and activities. It might be just what you need to make it feel less overwhelming!

Just to clarify, can we use a project for both a prompt and a bingo square?

Yes. The extra events that LovelyMiss adds each season are meant to be paired with the prompts. The prompts are what get you points, the extras are to reach pins for various things, such as pins or other extra goodies. If you get to the end of the season and you’ve used up all of the prompts and free range spots, you can still post a project to reach your goal, you just need to state that’s what you’re doing

I love seeing all of the new faces around here! I keep track of the projects posted around here. I’m trying to keep up on it a little better than I have been this season. If anyone has any questions about how to post, please don’t hesitate to ask! If I see any issues or need clarification when I’m catching up on tracking, I’ll send you a message to make sure we’re on the same page

Yep! My 16-year-old asked me if she could have my pins last year and I said, ā€œno, I earned those! But next year you could earn them for yourselfā€ and her response was, ā€œthat’s too much workā€ :joy:

All the more reason for me to keep them for myself, lol!

I also love the change for the pin prize claims! It will make it easier for you and also for us

I also wanted to add: I love having this space and time that’s just for me.

With homeschooling my kids for so many years and still having one our of 3 homeschooled… so much of my time is spent with and for my kids, which I absolutely love and wouldn’t change for the world. I have had so much privilege to spend this much time with my kids and to be the main influence during their formative years. But I can’t deny that it is exhausting, and I need ā€œme timeā€ more than I ever did before I had children. So I do enjoy this space being ā€œjust for meā€ and my online friends

Your post didn’t upset me at all, because I can totally relate to wanting to include our kids! I believe your homeschool as well? So you are already pouring so much of your time and energy into their activities. I can relate to feeling guilty for not including the family, as I’ve been there, but I’ve learned that if I don’t take some time to do the things that I enjoy on my own, I have a lot less energy when it comes to family stuff. So from my viewpoint, it’s really important to take some time away from the family  It’s a hard balance, and I’m still learning

Oops that was meant for @HeroicHatchling but I think I replied to the wrong comment; my apologies.

It’s amazing! And, I love that it’s reversible! Your crochet superpowers continue to impress!

ETA- And, after the reply above, I finished catching up on the thread. And @HeroicHatchling, I love that your kids are excited to share their creativity! I hope they never lose that enthusiasm

We put up bird feeders yesterday, and within a few hours, a cardinal was eating from it. So far he’s the only one. There’s a pair that hang out in our backyard, and I’m pretty sure this is a different male. I have named him Sir Rouge-inald (like Reginald but with rouge because he’s red :winking_face_with_tongue: lol). He makes me insanely happy, so I thought I’d share him with all of you, too!
