I’ve been MIA again, work has been… crazy. Also I kept trying to write up some comments in little bits of time and I kept losing where I was, so sorry if I missed some posts!

@HeroicHatchling – congrats on finishing a WIP! They look so cozy and warm! And the tail is adorable. The paper doll cards are so cute!

@MistressJennie – Beautiful little quilt, and I am drooling over all the treats! They look delicious!

@craftADDchick – That is a cute little recipe book! And I keep meaning to try the little twisty crochet ornaments, I really like the way they look!

@Mountains_and_Clouds – The cat artwork is cute, but those mugs are OUTSTANDING. I love them.

@Tapestry – That undersea postcard is gorgeous!

@graverobbergirl – I love the little plan signs! I wish I was better with growing herbs… I love the idea of it, but I mostly kill them. The little jars f candy are hilarious, I need to make some of those to give as gifts.

@Roler – Amazing rubber stamps!

Prompt: February - It will be a pizza cake

Brief Description: My fight with the blank wall continues, though I fear I have dug myself in so deep I will now be responsible for decorating the entire wall. People keep telling me how much they are enjoying it, though I know it still really, really, really bothers some people… This one has an added layer, as my workplaces uses the Extended DISC stuff, and they four quadrants that you can be are represented by these colors, so… nuance!

Amazing! The pipe cleaner people remind me of Keith Haring in the best way.

Project Name: 100 Mini Mailboxes Valentines

Project Link: 100 Mini Mailbox Valentines

Brief Description: After coming across a blog post with these mini mailboxes to hold two Hershey’s nuggets, I thought they’d be super cute to make for my students. Then I saw a video of a crew using leaf blowers to clear a ski jump track at the Winter Olympics, and the red flags reminded me of flags on mailboxes, so I knew I had my entry! I just had to get them all made in time… and, I had a last minute pivot when I realized how expensive it would be to actually use Hershey’s nuggets.

And here’s the Instagram reel from the Olympics:

Project Link: Crochet Ribbed Beanie (with pattern) - #9 by craftADDchick (This is not a new topic, I just added to the post from the first hat).

Brief Description: Given a choice, I prefer thin crust over thick, but for this hat, thick crust was a better choice. The ribbed single crochet makes for a thick hat!

Project Name: Gelli printing experiments
Project Link: N/A
Brief Description: For my February Make-It goal, I played around with some items I’d saved for printing on the gelli plate, including game-piece punch-out remainders and upholstery samples. Gelli printing leaves an increasingly thick layer (crust) of paint on the paper (and sometimes the edges of the plate).

Nerd Games Book Fair

Books I loved as a child:

  1. The Monster at the End of This Book, by Jon Stone- “You turned the page!” was always so funny to me.
  2. Harriet the Spy, by Louise Fitzhugh- I don’t know what exactly drew me to this book over and over again, but I think I need to read it again as an adult!
  3. The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett- My mother read this to us, and I remember how happy I was to be able to finally read it on my own.

Books I love as an adult:

  1. Misery, by Stephen King- The tension in this book is masterful! Every once in a while, I would open the book to a random page, read it to the end, then go back to the beginning and read it all the way through. I read it so many times that my copy fell apart, and I had it wrapped with a rubber band. I finally did buy a new copy.
  2. The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, by Alan Bradley- I love how Flavia de Luce uses her love of chemistry to solve the crime. The entire series is great!
  3. There’s a Hair in My Dirt! by Gary Larson- It’s a book I have read to my students because I love the perspective from the worm’s point of view, and how the story unfolds in such an unexpected way.
  4. Tuesday, by David Wiesner- I’m adding this as a bonus. While this is a children’s picture book, with no words, the story it tells through the illustrations is fantastic! I have a couple of his other books, and they are all wonderful.
  5. Doggies by Sandra Boynton- Another bonus because I love to read this to children, and I almost always give it as a gift at a baby shower. I used to read it to my friends’ son, and I would howl at “9 dogs on a moonlit night.” I was delighted when he started to howl when his parents read it to him!

This is my entry for the Book Fair because Harriet the Spy recorded all of her observations in notebooks. I think it’s where my love of notebooks and journals originated!

Three books loved in childhood:

  1. A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett - I must have read that book a dozen times. I was obsessed with the drama of it all.
  2. The Dollhouse Murders by Betty Ren Wright - I loved the creepy ghost mystery aspect and this book was a gateway drug to the cozy mysteries I read in adulthood.
  3. Remember Me by Christopher Pike - this was a fave as a teen. Because ghosts. And murder. I clearly have a book type.

Three books loved as an adult:

  1. Hedgehog Howdedo by Lynley Dodd - hordes of adorable hedgehogs, cute prose, and lovely artwork. I love this book and read it to my kids often.
  2. Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews - I’ve reread this series so many times. It’s an amazing Urban Fantasy book with a kickass heroine, fantastic world building, and a smoldering slow-burn romance.
  3. The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osmond - the best cozy mystery ever written. Twisty plot, unforgettable characters. I adore it.

Book Fair Event

Three books loved in childhood:

  1. The Gingerbread Man - I loved the artwork of the version I had, and my mom read it so often, she could “read” it to me without looking and tell me when to turn the page.

  2. Go Dog Go - I loved to do funny voices for the characters (especially “Do you like my hat?”), and it was the first book I read on my own when I was 5.

  3. Green Eggs and Ham - I can still recite this book as an adult. I’m not sure if it’s the prose or the grumpy character that drew me to it as a kid, but I loved it!

Three books loved as an adult:

  1. The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce. It’s a slow read, but it’s about mental healing and growth that I needed to read at the time I did. It helped me feel better.

  2. The Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde - I love that Thursday is a flawed character, and I love that idea that she can enter books and talk to the characters. The Cat formerly known as Cheshire is the best.

  3. Sabriel (the whole Abhorsen series really) by Garth Nix. I love books with strong female leads, and Tim Curry narrates the audiobooks, making them even more magical.
