Peony Remake Brooch & Peony Hair Pin

Here’s one more from last month - a peony brooch.

I’ve been trying to spend more time this year on finishing projects that have been pending for a while. The central flower is reclaimed from an older hair accessory that I didn’t think was particularly successful, which I took apart a few years ago but never followed up on. The leafs are new, and I think it is more successful now - even though the brooch is kind of ginormous, haha.

I also made this peony kusudama (medicine ball) hair pin. I have a tendency to hoard craft supplies; not just ‘special’ bits and bobs, but pretty much everything - I have an unfortunate habit of buying in bulk or overbuying supplies. So, part of my ‘finishing older projects’ mantra this year also includes ‘using up older supplies,’ like these foam balls.

I received a production grant a few years ago, which got pushed back when I was sick and going through cancer treatment last year. My production list is over 700 individual items (only 274 pieces left to make!), and I’ve been pushing really hard this year to try and get through the list - which plays right into finishing all these old projects and using up older materials, haha.

Absolutely stunning. All those little petals are perfection. The jewel in the center of the second one enhances it just right.

These are just gorgeous, and you’re doing such an amazing job of creating so many beautiful pieces now that the treatments are behind you.

I’m so glad to hear you’re feeling better and that you are able to create pieces that you love.

I am curious; was the grant to encourage the creation of a specific type of art, or did you have some freedom to choose different types?

Thank you for sharing your beautiful pieces with us!

The grant was for the production of specific types of items, which I had to propose myself. For me, it was lapel pins/brooches, hair pin and clip sets, small - medium - large fascinators, clutch purses, candeliers, and couture outfits. :3 I’m working my way through most of the smaller projects first.
