Plant Tags from Soda Cans

These will be included with a gardening-related gift for TheMisterT’s upcoming birthday.

They’re made by die-cutting a soda can, punching holes with a crop-a-dile, and adding floral wire.

My intention was that he use a ballpoint pen to dent the metal which would not fade in the sun. He could also use a permanent marker or wax pencil, as well, which would make them reuseable. Gardner’s choice!

What a wonderful way to upcycle! What kind of die cutter do you have that cuts through metal? I use tin snips to cut up aluminum cans, but a die cutter would be so much better for some of my projects!!!

Thanks! I just use a regular Sizzix Big Shot. These were cut with just their regular thinlits-style dies, but I have also used their Bigz (steel rule) dies to cut aluminum drink cans. I don’t know how well any of these would cut other metals. I believe Sizzix (or somebody) does make a jewelry specific die-cutting-for-metals machine, though. Do I have that right, @MistressJennie ?

The Sizzix Big Shot was also marketed (in a different color, but the exact same machine) as the Vintaj Sizzix BIGKick. It was supposed to work with Vintaj jewelry blanks that you can buy in copper, brass, etc. You could use either Etching dies or Embossing folders. The Etching ones did lighter designs, and the Embossing folders gave you deeper impressions. But I don’t think any of them cut metal.

Ahhh. THANKS for chiming in!

@meowari I have used standard embossing folders on aluminum cans with the Big Shot, too.
