Potion Bottle tutorial

These are fun potions to give away at the Renn Faire this season. This year I painted runes on the outside.

Here’s how to make your own. Clean a small bottle with a lid that tightens and remove any labels. These are spice bottles I’ve saved this year.

Add water then a few drops of food coloring.

Mix to check if you like the color, then add mica powder. You don’t need much! Sometimes I do matching mica, sometimes contrasting. Both are fun.

Top up with water and swirl. You can adjust the color or add mica if needed.

Now take the top back off, dry the lid and rim, then glue around the inside and replace lid. I used E6000.

Next wrap the bottle neck with twine or leather lace. Tack ends down with glue as needed.

If I’m doing just one I usually seal the top with sealing wax dripped on, but for this big batch I melted wax and dipped the tops in it. This adds another seal, disguises the lid, and finishes the top of the twine as well.

They’re so satisfying to watch swirl.

What a fun way to reuse bottles that would otherwise end up in the trash! I especially like the gif at the end - mesmerizing!
