I think I’m in over my head. I was rewatching Lord of the Rings with my bf last month and noticed the pouch Merry hands Pippin (last of the long bottom?), which was leather, but I started hyper fixating on it and thought, hey I could knit something similar. I googled lord of the rings charts, and found this gorgeous color work and cabled chart Ithilien brocade stitch pattern and while it’s not my first cabled project, maybe it’s been awhile, since I do not understand how to do a cable twist every row? Like how to make sure it’s a left or right cross when you’re on the wrong side of the fabric. Maybe it’s supposed to be knit in the round? The link is to a free chart, but there is little information or explanation. In some of the notes I’ve found on other people’s projects using this chart, they do say it seems vague getting started, but not how they figure it out. Various YouTube searches have not been too helpful so far.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Here are the yarns I picked out for the project. I was thinking about using brown for the background color, green for the leaves and yellow for the “trellis” (the twisted cables). It’s Oceana from knitpicks, a blend of recycled plastic yarn and Alpaca. A little fuzzier than i was expecting but still very pretty.
Looking at the blog post pic of the chart I do not see any mentions for purling so my assumption would be knit in the round. Good luck, it’s a cool idea for a project.

The chart is a companion piece for the jacket of the same name, Ithilien Brocade Stitch Jacket. Reading through her comment, it does look like it is knit in the round.
Knit in the round, watch the photo as well as the chart to keep yourself on track, go slow and don’t be squeamish about pulling out stitches and reknitting as needed. And post updates to LC for moral support!

Slow is right! I read in her notes that she cast on 348 stitches for her jacket. She put in 8 steeks…yikes! It took her several hours to get one inch even before starting the pattern!
That jacket was a labor of love and she didn’t post a pattern because so much of it was made up as she went. She is a much more serious knitter than I am, but it was inspiring!
I am about to cast on a summer sweater using linen chainette yarn. It might be ready to wear by winter…ha!

I am actually going to use a linen blend. I really can’t pay $180 for the yarn for a little summer sweater. The yarn I ordered is still about $60 so I better make it!
BTW, you had me thinking about how lovely that pattern would be flat like on just one panel of a cardigan or something. I found some helpful videos on how to do colorwork flat, although I still think doing it in the round with steeking might be faster. I thought maybe over the summer I would do a test to see how to work out those cross stitches. I think I know in my head, but doing it is another thing!
