I got this cute little book from my mum’s house (not sure if it came from my gran because my mum doesn’t sew?). It has so many cute things, plus some cool historic pictures.
Look at all the triangles!
And the scrapiness!
This beautiful embroidered quilt with luxurious fabric and thread
Have we had this block before?
This reminds me of a one-block wonder, but its not, its been curated!
I have also mean meaning to show these cute QAYG blocks that I found in a basket I saw hidden in a corner of my gran’s ‘craft shop’.
So much goodness. And that pinwheel quilt block I’ve made, but I don’t think we’ve had it as a BOM.
I just googled the ‘whirlwind’ and saw a few different patterns, but one that looked the same to the above. However they have used the same fabric for the pinwheel, instead of different fabrics like the diagram, so give a different effect.
@mellybelly81 Did they have a tutorial for the whirlwind block? We can add it as a BOM for December.
Also, do any of the BOM participants want to choose one of @marionberries block options for October (or nominate a different block). I will be out of town this weekend and will add the October BOM next week.
The September scrap-a-thon ends tomorrow, so for anyone interested in getting last minute entries in, you still have time!
I, AIMR, submit this as my current Sept BOM entry.
I loved this block! I used the same batiks as for my other BOMS, just in a different combination.
Thanks for extending the scrapathon deadline! That means I might just finish my item in time.
oh—I missed that! I was sort of busy last night but I can probably finish my little scrap project as well!
September Scrap-a-thon deadline extended until the end of Sunday, October 2nd!
Thanks for the responses @Immaculata & @AIMR. After hearing that the extra time is welcomed, I figure why end it today when we have a whole weekend?
Pretty colors, it’s lovely.
I marionberries submit my scrappy blocks for the ** scrap-a-thon **. I’ve made 11 so far with one more to go. They will be made intto a lap quilt to donate through another quilt group I am in.
As I was picking through my huge scrap bin for specific colors, I was trying to think of how I could use a bunch quickly…it is hard for me to use scraps without a specific goal.
I think a scrappy colorful quilt would be a nice long term goal…it might help me get out of the headlights when I see the pile! Those are lovely!
My machine broke
The zig-zag stitch is no longer working. I’m going to take it into the repairshop next week. The straight stitch seems to be working, but I’m not sure if I would do more harm by continuing to use it.
I’m a bit worried about my old trusted machine! It’s a Bernina that my mum bought it when she was newly married. It’s 40-ish year old. She passed it on to me when she bought a new one in the early 00s. I don’t remember it ever having any issues before and it gets serviced every year. Maybe it’s nothing, but I’m a little bit worried because my friend has a similar machine that was damaged beyond repair last week - the motor exploded! Literally, BOOM, a bit of smoke, dead machine.
Sometimes the lever that controls the needle gets stuck…put it on the zig zag stitch and then push the needle holder back and forth like it is suppose to zig zag…do you oil your machine?
My old Kenmore also blew out its motor…it was about 50 years old…one of the saddest days of my life was putting it out on the curb for disposal…I loved that machine.
You know you’re a crafter when you can absolutely imagine how heart-breaking it must have been to put that machine out on the kerb. Especially if it’s the machine you learned to sew on. You never forget your first machine!
I think it’s a gear issue. When I move the zig-zag dial from left to right, it normally makes this “clicking” sound while moving from one type of stitch to another, and it moves the needle. Now I can just move the dial and it doesn’t make a sound and it doesn’t move the needle. It’s like it doesn’t “catch”. I’m hoping there’s an easy way to fix it. It does get oiled and I also sew pretty frequently. It was due for maintenance soon anyway so I’m just not going to touch it and leave it to the professionals.
Those older machines are very long lasting but if there are plastic cams inside, they can wear out/crack over time. Hopefully solvable, whatever it is.
I am stitching scraps today but not for quilts, little bags & other small projects.
Really love those rainbow squares @marionberries, reminds me of the baby books @Abbeeroad & I made.
I, AIMR, submit this as a small, scrappy project.
I have had a list of fall and Halloween projects made from scraps on my list for quite some time! I am probably one of those few people who actually like candy corn, so I have many projects like this to decorate my house…
I love candy corn too. Irresistibly nom!
When sewing hexies, do you hand cut your templates or prefer a punch? This looks like a great travel craft & so perfect for scrap-busting, especially if you’re not in a hurry to finish anythjng & just want some busy work when you have time on your hands.
Question about EPP - does the paper just live inside the project forever? Doesn’t that make a mess of things if you wash it?
You pull it out. Like, the template is there to make the shape, then you stitch the shapes together, then you untack the template from the inside & pull it out. It’s garbage then, if I understand correctly, but that’s why you use scrap paper for them.
