Seeing them side to side (you know what I mean…next to each other…lol) like this really is cool…they go together so well!
@MistressJennie , fabulous block and quilt tops! Lovely.
This didn’t use up all 160 HST’s leftover from making the quilt top, but it did use up 144 of them. Not bad! It comes to about 17" square(-ish).
Meanwhile I looked around for batting and backing at home, but I couldn’t find anything for backing that I could even possibly pretend worked, and I am completely out of batting, even scraps. So I checked Joann’s. They had both quilt batting and backing on sale yesterday, but they also had a 25% off anything you order online for curbside pickup, even if it was already on sale. So I scored 2 twin size battings for $16 each, and flannel backing for this for $12, and grabbed some backing for another quilt top I have laying around for $15.
Where has this month gone!? Seriously, I feel like I just typed out the message announcing the September prompt and the Super Spectacular September Scrap-a-thon.
Speaking of which, there are 5 days left in the Scrap-a-thon. That’s definitely enough time for some small scrappy projects like some Quick to Quilt Coasters, a Quilt as you go placemat or two, a bowl cozy (which could be made using larger scraps, or given a ‘scrappy’ look with smaller scraps. It would be really neat to make a Christmas ornament out of scraps from projects completed this year! There are definitely a ton of options that would easily fit within the definition of a small, which is something that takes you less than ten hours to sew and quilt.
So far, we only have one entry into the Scrap-a-thon. With two prizes at stake, everyone has pretty good odds if they submit an entry. So quick, to the sewing machine with those scraps!
@MistressJennie That crystal ball skull makes for such a fun center square. I really like your block’s color scheme! Also, you’re such a quilting superstar, that you’ve already submitted a medium challenge entry for this quarter (your rainbow carpenter’s wheel). You can submit your scrappy diamond trip quilt top as a personal finish or as a Scrap-a-thon entry. Just let me know which one you’d prefer to enter it as.
I have something I could enter, but it’s a swap item. It will be a race to the end of the month whether it arrives before the month is out!
I, tendstowardschaos , offer postage stamp quilt top for my medium September Scrap-a-thon
entry.
I actually have two of these (the other is just missing a border right now), lol.
Wow!!
D’oh! Sorry about that. Let’s go with Scrap-a-thon.
Wow and it’s wild. It has a vintage feel for some reason, all those fun colors and prints. And so many littlw squares! Impressive.
This is only a medium!? It must’ve taken forever to sew all those squares together. You did a great job on having such nice straight even rows!
I marionberries submit this as my current Sept BOM entry.
I went with a Holiday theme and this block will take the December position on the quilt. It looks like an open package to me. Now to decide what I will do with the October BOM.
What a fun and festive bright block! I like your open package interpretation, I can see it now that you mentioned it!
This is an excellent question. I didn’t realize there is not a BOM block for October. We have four days to choose a block, does anyone have any suggestions? We also need a block for December.
Thanks! I honestly wasn’t keeping track of how long I spent on these tops, and I didn’t want to claim a large for just one of them (as it’s just the top). I chain-pieced everything, no pinning, just sewing with wild abandon. I tried to keep the directional fabrics oriented the same way, and tried to avoid putting identical fabrics right next to one another (I almost succeeded, but I did accidentally grab a square from the wrong pile in the last stage of sewing and screw up the layout of one top…was not in the mood to rip it apart to fix, so it stayed). They will end up as two twin-sized quilts with wool batting (I took the plunge!).
Please let us know your thoughts on the wool batting once you’ve gotten them finished and have a better idea about the pros and cons of the batting. I’ve considered using it before and would love to hear your opinion on it. I think those quilts deserve the name of “Sew Many Squares,” lol. I love the patchwork look of it!
Just some options for October, some are easy, but then October is a busy month for LC people.
October options:
this one is very simple, but has an interesting 5 square row for the stem and leaves vs the 4 square grid for the pumpkin.
Or for spooky bats, another easy one
This one would need a 12" square of bats pulled out of the overall quilt.
Or just go fall theme with something like this (I’d have to find the pattern again, though it’s just HST and squares:
I will definitely let you know. That’s a good project title - I may just steal that. After my last scrap quilt, I wanted something scrappy, but less…crazy? I still haven’t turned that last one scrap-side up, lol.
I @edel have two entries for the scrap-a-thon. (Can I enter even if I’m sponsoring a prize??)
This scrappy top cushion case
And this mug rug.
The darker one is my favorite. They are both wonderful, but those rich colors draw me.
@marionberries, those all look like fun blocks, though the link to your more complicated bats is the same as the link to the pumpkin.
@Edel, yes, you can definitely enter your scrappy projects! Just let me know what size to enter them as .
All my free time lately has been going toward my Candy Corn Quilt Shoppe quilts. I almost have all of the extra blocks quilted. One of the extra blocks is made up of pieced squares. I used a 1/4” allowance, but when I went to quilt both blocks (mine and my mom’s), they both seemed to be about a quarter inch short (I guess I should’ve used a scant 1/4”). I’m hoping everything lines up correctly when it comes time to sew all the pieces together, I really don’t want to have to redo those blocks, even as simple as they were to create!
