I also enjoy the BOMs! Though I have yet to make it through all 12, I really enjoy trying something new every month. Hopefully one of these years I’ll make a full quilt like @marionberries!!
I don’t have any new ideas but I’ll set my mind to work on that in the background. I do hope that the quilt along continues in some form next year!
I’ve only finished one block of the BOM, I love the BOM but for me it’s an aspirational thing. I wish I had time for it, I learned more than one thing that I still practice from that one block (how to make flying geese & the best way to iron quilt blocks). I like blocks that can be made from stash and don’t require expensive tools.
Oh, the stuff I’ve learned…and forgotten again. I do love that aspect of the BOM. For me, it’s just the right amount of doable project per month and I get a quilt at the end. Or maybe I’ll do some other project next year. Though a donatable lap quilt is a big win, something I can give back to the community while I have fun creating things with fabric.
After a busy couple of weeks, today I have a few hours set aside for quiting! I’m cutting up the last scraps for the scrap quilt I started in september (the one with the animal butts ) and maybe I ihave time to make some quick Christmas gifts as well.
Thank you all for your input. Here’s what I’m thinking, we can use @Magpie’s ideas of paper piecing, applique, templates, like hexies and stash only projects for monthly prompts/quarterly challenges to encourage and inspire members to try different techniques. There are plenty of months in the year and I am open to new ideas for prompts/challenges, so feel free to share any additional ideas you all may have.
As for the BOM, let’s run with @MistressJennie’s idea of having traditional BOMs with a paper pieced option. I’m thinking we could do four blocks with a paper pieced option, that way we can have one each quarter for members to choose from. What do you all think?
Here are a few other ideas I’m thinking of implementing in our 2023 Quiltalong:
A jelly roll race contest
A quarterly incentive to complete projects from personal to-do lists
And I think that’s where my ideas currently end.
Please feel free to share all of your ideas so that we can make next year’s Quiltalong the best so far!
I am so excited. I found a local quilt group. They had an exhibition and there were loads of quilts! The group has only been going since August, but it’s local and one woman even owns a long arm. They meet once a month for a whole day of sewing.
When cleaning out my mom’s house my sister and I found several quilts. Bedspread size and baby quilt size. We have no if they were made by one of the grandmas, great or great great, and which side, no clue. I am just going to assume some lovely ancester of mine made them.
I took a hexie quilt, standard bed size, all hand stitched and quilted. Not sur whar I will do with it yet, it would look great in the guest room if we ever stop foster kittens, it’s their room.
Take a look.
There are 36 colours and trawling through my stash I found 33-so I only had to buy 3*half meters, not the ‘correct’ Kona colours, but close enough. I like to use up stuff, so there are many memories in these solids, from table cloths that I dyed for my wedding to remnants from medieval garb, some thrift shop finds and some swap FQs

I just got the pattern. Not sure if I have 36 colors, so I am going to have some repeats but at least it will use up a lot of my solid color stash!
Not all the colours are used in the same amounts, some only require three triangles, so you might have some in scrap? At least one of my colours is a cotton shirt that I cut down, and another is some plain sections of large design, and some are pieces I dyed myself.
You could go all Scarlett o hara and cut up the curtains
And @AIMR let me know when you have it cut and are ready to start piecing, I think I’ve figured out the most efficient way to chain piece it, without losing your spot in the pattern.
I know I should stop replying with every time you post a progress picture, but every time I see your progress, I can’t help but squee! It’s just SO.DARN.PRETTY. I have dreams of being able to make one some day.
