Quiltalong - 2023

Wow! So many pieces! Some of them look very tiny! I have a true respect for those who have the patience for such work to create images…you really did a fabulous job and Molly is going to be showing it off!

I’m ready to jump in again! It’s been very motivating to follow you guys for the last 6 months but my hands are itching to get some sewing done myself.

I’ve got a few boxes out of storage, I don’t have all my supplies yet but I have some. I’ve figured out (somewhat) what I was working on:

  • Animal butts quilt → blocks need to be squared up and assembled, can’t do that yet
  • I was doing something strip-quilt-y for myself, for some reason cut up part of the strips in triangles, don’t know why and need to figure out how to fix this
  • I was in scrappy swap last year and I was planning to use to scraps to make a scrappy knitting bag. I’ve already got the handles → need some extra precuts for that
  • The last project I finished before packing up was making two small tops from scraps, these need to be basted, quilted and bound → need pins for that that I haven’t found yet

I got a jelly roll as a gift and was thinking of trying a jelly roll run quilt, but I have a somewhat silly question. Do I wash the fabric first?

Fabric shrink is no joke so that is a smart question. I hot launder & dry everything first but pre-cut strips would fray so…

That’s what I was thinking! If it were a regular quilt, 100% I would wash them, but jelly rolls seem precut and washing would distort them, so I was confused.

No no…you don’t have to pre-wash precuts! Also, most modern quilting fabrics now are not as prone to shrink as they were in the past. I rarely preshrink my quilting cottons anymore. Plus, if you are making a quilt, a bit of shrinkage is what gives that crinkly look that a lot of people like. I prewash if it is for clothing just because of the sizing and potential chemicals against the skin.

Good to know! Thank you!

I always wash the quilt before sending or giving away. Yes it may shrink a bit, but that adds to the charm, new quilts always feel so comfy coming out of the dryer. And if the whole quilt is mostly non-prewashed, everything should shrink (if at all) about the same. We hope.

AIMR is right. Modern, good quality quilting cottons don’t need to be pre washed. There is a bit of sizing in them, to keep them smooth on the bolt, (or in the jelly roll as the case may be), and this is generally helpful in cutting and pressing things as you make a quilt block or top. If it’s a really cheap, lower quality fabric, you may be taking a gamble on shrinking (the kind of thing where you can see the grain of the weave clearly, without squinting or holding the fabric up to your face). But yeah, the 2-3% shrinkage is what creates the gentle crinkle on modern quilts that’s so popular and comforting to wrap up in.

I am thinking a quilt will be my Fall/Winter project. I have to get stuff made for a craft show for a cat shelter first, and then I am free to make what I want. I am super excited about the jelly roll, though. I actually have two, but the first one, I wasn’t excited about the print/color. I got this in jelly roll form.

I am not sure what to do with it.

I went ahead and bought some quilting safety pins.

That fabric definitely has a fall feel with those warm colors and would work well for a cold month quilt project. But I wasn’t sure if that’s the fabric you like or don’t like?

I have a few jelly rolls just waiting to be transformed into quilts. After seeing this quilt, I was planning on making my own with the same jelly roll (Maywood’s ombré gelato), but then I came across this Equalizer pattern and after seeing it at a quilt show (pic below), I’m thinking of going with it instead.

That is absolutely gorgeous!

It was love at first sight when I saw that quilt! I was happy to find the pattern while shopping in the quilt show, otherwise I would’ve undoubtedly spent quite a bit of time trying to track it down .

That was the fabric I didn’t like. Browns are not really my thing, and teddy bears. Eh. Not me.
I absolutely LOVE that rainbow quilt! It’s so pretty and I love the color changes.

This is the quilt I plan on making this Fall. I ordered the last of the fabric today.

I plan on making it a little longer, into a throw quilt, so I can cozy up with it over the winter.

Both those quilts are beautiful. I would have a hard time picking between them on which one to make.
