Prior to seeing this fabric listed in the mystery bundle, I hadn’t come across this type of fabric design. I really like the feel of it (minus those bugs, lol). It reminds me of an artist whose work I really enjoy. In fact, I like her art so much, it inspired me to pick up all the supplies I need to try and create a similar style myself. Now, I’m thinking I’ll also use this fabric as inspiration and I’ll add aboriginal designs to my list when I browse for fabric online!
Oh, also, I’m glad for the way it was folded because it didn’t focus on any one element (ie. it didn’t have the teal flower ball in the center, or the black polka dot seed pod), rather it captures a little bit of everything, which made me realize that when we get our cutting instructions, I don’t have to fussy cut to focus around any specific element. I can instead, let it be more abstract with bits of the various designs showing.
I’m so glad you decided to get it @Edel !! I can’t wait to see what you’re going to make. They are extremely rare here, too, I’ve never seen one for sale on the used market.
We watched it as well! I was very impressed by the originality of the quilts. Some appealed to me more than others, but none of them looked like what you see in quilt mags or Pinterest. The men clearly use their own creativity.
I am always shocked by how common very long or whole life sentences are in the US. Life sentences are only very rarely handed out in my country. There is a much larger group who are placed in a forensic psychiatric clinic as part of their sentence. Arts and crafts are an important part of the programs there. I’m not surprised it benefits these men as well, even though it’s not part of a formal treatment.

When I worked for a law firm in Atlanta, one of our criminal clients was on death row. He taught himself how to crochet amigurumi. He could make any creature without a pattern…so much detail and such tight stitches. What was even harder to believe was that he did it with a paper clip! I felt bad that he had all of this creativity that could have led him in a different direction in life. I agree that arts and crafts are good therapy for a lot of life issues.
LittleBookLover’s summer break is quickly approaching. We will be going out of town for his break, so I am working diligently to get the second quarter prize packs finished up and ready to go! I can do some things while we’re at the apartment, but I’m much more limited. I have most of my craft supplies here at home, so if there’s something I need while at the apartment, I need to make sure to pack it.
I’m also working on getting the house in order and packing up any supplies for crafts I might want to do this summer (while trying to keep in mind that I can only do so much with LittleBookLover home all day - but also keeping in mind that if I want to work on something, I need to make sure I have the supplies for it).
ETA - the good thing is that if there’s something I really need, I can have my husband bring it down on a weekend. The bad thing is that I have to expect him to be able to find it, which reminds me of a recent conversation -
Husband - What did you do with the toothpaste?
Me - What do you mean, it should be right there.
Husband - No, it’s nowhere around!
Me - I bet I’ll come in and find it directly in front of you.
Husband - No, you won’t because it’s not in here.
Me - Walks into the bathroom and indeed, finds it directly in front him, literally right there.
Picture taken at the Victoria and Albert museum. According to the sign, this robe belonged to an upperclass gentleman in the second half of the 19th century and was made from silk scraps. These silks were used for ties and vests.
I’ve been crazy busy the past month! Getting ready for an international friend visiting, my 50th bday, and a 2-week vacation. I’m in Manhattan… seriously? Only 1 quilt shop?
But I got to visit fabric row. All the gorgeous, expensive fabrics for projects i don’t have yet.
I totally fell behind on this quarters quilting goals and on quilt bingo. But I did a bingo prompt today.
-create a block.
I finished lots of blocks, in fact I finished all the blocks for the hypothetical grandbaby quilt. ( In the future to be known as the I-Spy quilt) I increased the count to 90 because I think it needs 9*10
I’ve just pulled out my quilt bingo. I’ve really fallen behind this quarter, but it’s been busy. But I have lots of lovely free time coming up. And we’re going to put together my long armer this weekend so hopefully I’ll hit a serious quilting vibe. I want to make a few quick and easy flimsies, so I’ve something to work on. I’m thinking of this as lovely, but simple.
My initial thought was that I don’t think it’s too quiet at all. After looking up your original quilt, I can see what you mean about it being pretty loud.
I think if you were to add in a few more colorful blocks here and there among these botanical blocks it would give you a good mix and prevent it from being too quiet.

I do like the patterns the fabric makes, but in an overall quilt, it feels quite vintagey? It almost looks like just a floral fabric. Probably because of all the white background. It doesn’t “feel” like you.
