Quiltalong - 2025

Those are both great tips, @AIMR and @Edel! I like the jumbo 2.5 gallon Hefty bags to store everything in. They’re such a great size for so many different projects!

I’ve been sorta doing this for a while(or trying). I have bags but also use the 12x12 plastic scrapbook cases. But this made me think I need to be more consistent. I have a beautiful teal backing I bought for a quilt and the pattern, the fabric and partial blocks, and backing are all in different places. At least it’s a rare enough color to flag my brain every time I see it “don’t use it! You bought it for a reason”

I was inspired by the current bingo call to make this for DH. I could call this a prototype, because the stitching is decidedly shonky in places, but who am I kidding I’m never making another one!

Husband is going on a retirement cruise and so I’ve been making him bowties today for the formal nights. And I thought of a dedicated bowtie+cufflinks pouch, that could be hung inside the cabin, but also functioned as a pouch for travel..

Dug out all my vaguely nautical scraps and made this pieced and quilted pouch thing.

It opens up flat, (zipper on each side), hanging loop at top

Little pockets close with snaps and are transparent in front (which was why I needed the dodgy binding, as the plastic wouldnt hold up over time). It holds 5 bowties

I am constantly surprised at the practical and fun things people who sew make to fill a function! I believe this is the first bow tie carrier I have ever seen!

I, AIMR, submit 3 pouches and a basket, completing 4 of my goal list items. The wide mouth pouches are from quilty media, specifically, a blog by Noodlehead. I would say that a lot of my projects meet the challenge this quarter because I find a lot of inspiration on one particular site and thread…Lettuce Craft!

I posted more details here.

For the bingo prompt:
07/23 - Share some pics of your fabric stash

It’s a small stash because most of mine was tossed into storage in May to try making room for guests (aka: hide my mess). This is what I have right here.

This is a project box with the pink fabrics I’ve been using this year for challenge blocks, two new fabrics I bought today, and some muslin and 2” strips I picked up at a quilt guild meeting earlier this month. I’ve cut most of them into pieces for the Bonnie Hunter 2025 Leaders and Enders challenge my guild took on as a challenge to make charity quilts.

Also.. Woah! Did the site update? It just linked my photo immediately rather than all the upload/processing/maybe load, maybe freeze I’ve dealt with forever.

Nice selection of pinks!

Yes, the site did update! You can also click on each picture and immediately make them smaller or larger or trash them by clicking on the symbols in the upper left! No more percentages typing!

One of the bingo prompts was to share a quilting tips. I submit

Measure twice, cut once.

Simple, not profound, but all I can think of at the moment. Do I do it? No. Do I know better? Yes. Does that change anything? Not at all lol

Talking about inspiration from a magazine…. I was leafing through a (German) quilting magazine yesterday, and I came across a perfect baby quilt. I really love it so much and I have the perfect fabric for it in stash, but my friends are done having babies as far as I know. I left the magazine open on my desk and now suddenly, I got the news this morning that if all goes well I’ll be an aunt in spring! It’s still very early stages so I feel it’s a bit tempting fate to start already, but on the other hand, if I want it to be ready in time for baby, I should start asap.

Magazine is Patchwork Magazin, and old issue, 6/2018.

I think it is a lovely pattern for anyone! What interesting fabrics…you know I love lime green and purple together with orange!

Starting now will just mean you will have a quilt done. I hope all goes well with your niece’s pregnancy.

It’s all the colours of the rainbow in one charm pack, plus yardage in the two colours I liked most for sashing / backing.

I usually make gender neutral baby things because it’s not as customary to announce the gender and name beforehand in my country as it is in other places, and even if they announce the gender they themselves won’t know until three months from now.

Did not need more fabric. But stopped at Goodwill. They either have yellow tags 50% off or… I don’t know what? But I bought 2 packs of fabric marked $7.99 for $4/each. Now I’ve got an Easter quilt or 3 in my future. Bought mainly because there was Peanuts themed fabric in both. I need to check my Rcpt again but I swear she only charged me for 1 of my 2 pieces of clothing too.

Well you couldn’t have left that behind!

My favorite designer. Hmmm. That is a hard one, but right now, It’s Heather Ross. I love her sweet drawings!

Lately I’ve been watching videos from The Quilted Forest, and Sunbeam Fabric Art. The Quilted Forest does several different styles of videos, but my favorite right now have been on how to use various cuts like 2.5” strips. I think they have 20+ videos for using up jelly roll strips. I like that they usually make 2 of each pattern too, so you can see it in different color ways or themes. Sunbeam Fabric Art is a lady who makes regular quilt projects, but then also makes lots of scrappy charity quilts. I’m not sure I love her style or color combinations, but I do really love her “dive in and make something right now” approach. It’s the total antithesis of my own style, and it’s something I try to occasionally emulate to get out of my own comfort zone.

My other favorites are a few books that show you how to make various quilt blocks in several sizes each, and break them down by style (2 grid, 3 grid, 16 grid, etc.) so you can find ones that will work well together, or find ones that will utilize a size of scrap you already have cut.

When sewing on something like binding, which is narrow and fidgety, try using a stylus or sewing awl to help hold the bit of fabric in place, as it feeds through your machine near the needle (where your fingers can’t fit, and shouldn’t go anyways). Basically just use the point of the awl to hold down the fabric, right as it feeds in, as close as you can. Your corners will come out neater, and you will be less frustrated. If you don’t have a sewing awl (I think mine is from Clover) you can use a seam ripper, or possibly That Purple Thang.

I’m not sure I have a favorite designer. Every time I think I love everything a particular one designs, they come out with something they gush over, that I find unappealing. So I tend to fall in love with particular lines or collections. But if I have to choose, I’d say I like many of Tula Pink’s collections (and tone on tone stripes), as well as Lizzy House. While I’m not into her latest collections (Love Letters, Tiny Christmas) Lizzy had some fairy tale collections that I adored. And a collection called 1001 Peeps, that I made a baby quilt out of, for my cousin’s baby. I think I made 8 baby quilts that summer, and so I just went easy on that one. This seems to be the only pic I have of it.

Like @MistressJennie I find it difficult to pin down one particular designer, currently I’m loving William Morris prints for Liberty. I’m heading to London on Wednesday and will hopefully go into liberty and indulge in a tiny scrap of fabric.

I love William Morris. I have looked longingly at drapes made from his prints. Maybe next year!

@MistressJennie I do use my Purple Thang to guide my fabrics in a tight squeeze or when I don’t want to sew my fingers together. I also have a sewing awl when I need more grip!

I have just purchased some 1/4 inch tape to put on my sewing machine. I watched a cool technique where you don’t have to draw lines to do HST if you use the guidelines of the tape. I tried it and it works!

My favorite fabric designer is probably Kaffe Fassett. I have collected his fabrics and books for years. I also like Alexander Fabric designs or Art Gallery Fabrics. I have discovered several other designers through this thread and from you guys! Of course, it makes me want to buy all the fabrics….

And I use the purple thang you sent me too. Its great!

Liberty is one of my favourite places to go in London  I always go there when we happen to be in London. Mr Imma jokes about the mock Tudor store with the creaky wooden stairs where everything is way too expensive, but I love it.

I think you’ve mentioned you can’t always find all the supplies you need in Ireland. In the big John Lewis on Oxford Circus they have a massive haberdashery department (I think it’s the top floor). They don’t have anything super special but they do have a very large selection of all the normal things, threads, patterns, notions, needles, yarn, fabric etc.
