Quiltalong - 2025

I love John Lewis, it used to be a regular haunt when I lived in London in the 80/90s sadly their haberdashery dept is much reduced from what it used to be.

In any case, I definitely don’t need any more fabric!!!

I, AIMR, submit this as my August on-time QBOM. This is also off my goal list. I guess they call it a Dutch Treat block because it does look like a tulip!

I, AIMR, submit these 5 quilt blocks as one of my 3rd qrt goals. These will be sent to Quilts of Valor. Each year, they put out a pattern and a tutorial for blocks that they will accept if you don’t want to make an entire quilt. This is a lot less stressful for me, especially since they have become quite strict in what they will accept. They have volunteers who take the blocks and then make quilts to honor a veteran. I really didn’t have any more suitable fabric for what they will accept (no florals, 3 values of colors, etc. etc. I don’t plan on making any more for them this year, so I won’t be buying any red, white and blue fabrics except to finish up some projects for Wounded Warriors.

Next on my list….finish my Mystery Quilt so I can get my Halloween Quilt done in time for Halloween!

You were lucky to have that back then! It’s still very big, I can’t imagine how big it must have been back then. Our department stores typically have a 1 meter haberdashery section in the household department so I’m not used to much.

My mum spent a lot of time in London for work back when you lived there and she told me there were so many fabric stores back then. Do you still have any fabric from back then in your stash?

I do! I had a long length of gorgeous designer wool fabric that I bought as a bolt end in Berwick st market-where all those things ended up, back in the late 80s it was 6£/yd which was a lot. I carried it around for years, and eventually shipped it (€€!!) to someone in the dead place, who did promise to make me something in return, but I never heard from them again :woman_shrugging:. Apart from that I have oddd and ends of fabrics from then. I have a gorgeous kimono I made from fabric I bought and 1986, that I still wear.

On the plane now to London.

Ooohh that’s a shame about the fabric. If I were them I’d feel so guilty about it. Have fun in London!

hmmm…I also shipped some purple Italian wool (4 yards) to someone on the dead place years ago and never heard back. Glad I kept the black because now I want to make a pair of wide leg trousers with it.

I have finally figured out how to measure twice and cut once. I put my quilting ruler where I think I am cutting, then use a tape measure to verify that I have actually lined up with the correct line on my ruler.

I guess my tip is; If you are not good at remembering what you are supposed to be cutting, write the size of just that piece down somewhere you can see it while you are cutting. I have a pile of mini whiteboards and pens in a pouch in my studio and I write the current piece on those. It adds a bit of time, but works out well because I save time and fabric by not making mistakes. Might not be neccessary if you’re not an ADHDer though!

I like the mini whiteboard idea, I’m going to steal that. Just hang one beside my cutting bench.

I love that idea!

I have bunches of cheat sheets for all sorts of sewing things to remember, particular with English piecing! It would be nice to have the ones I use most handy! Good tip!

Aw thanks both, I am glad it was useful. If you already have a small whiteboard, then you are cooking, but if not, the ones I have are dry erase index cards. I got mine from a place that does supplies for role playing games, but I have just looked on Amazon US, and they have a pack of 100 for $12. You might not need that many though :joy:

And my favourite fabric manufacturer is Ruby Star Society. I love their bold colours and their joyous, slightly offbeat designs. I have the Juicy print in both the pink and teal, and I really want to make improv sawtooth star Blocks with juice box middles.

I have just seen their Hello Alice line coming out in October and I want it all, especially the teacups. PDF about the Hello Alice line.

I love this fabric! I saw it in a shop a while ago, not sure where but I recognized it right away. I didn’t buy it because I wasn’t sure what to do with it but now I sort of wish I did!

Ruby Star is a close second to me. My sister loves Alice in Wonderland! That collection is amazing!

I am missing my sewing machine. I didn’t use it everyday, but knowing I can’t, sigh. I miss it.

I know, when it is gone you can think of so many things you could be sewing!

I just found out that it cant be fixed. The frame was warped. Sigh.

Bummer. I recently had to replace my machine. Bought a used Bernina off of ebay and was lucky it was in such good condition.
