Quiltalong - 2025

Mostly recovered. I went to our monthly quilting day yesterday and it worked fine, I might have pushed it a little

Because I wasn’t sure how it would behave, I brought cheap fabric with me. There were 10”sqs that were so thin and loads of “jelly rolls” or what the Chinese sellers call Jelly rolls, they were 10”*2.5 and I improvised. Actually I’m pretty happy with the result. The blues pop more in that photo than real life, it’s mostly greens and quite calming

I’ll add another border or two and it’ll be a good car or lap quilt

This is giving me all the Holly Hobbie vibes and I’m loving it!

I was looking for a word and Holly Hobbie sounds about right!

I’ve been planning a baby quilt for my new niece for a while, but my sewing space was filled with DIY tools and random stuff from when we put in the floor in the bedroom a few weeks ago. I’ve cleared out the space today and hopefully tomorrow I can get started. I’m going to use mostly precuts so hopefully it won’t take too long.

So I’ve to go for surgery in December. And while the surgery is straightforward, recovery will take some time. Apparently rotary cutting sessions will be not possible for about six weeks!!

My daughter has suggested I precut. So my plan is to cut a few quilt top pieces and put them in Ziploc bags for when I can do the odd bit of piecing. But it’ll be in short stints.

Hit me with suggestions for quilts that don’t need too much brain, that I can cut in advance. I’m thinking of ones like this. Link below

Quick update for those who won a prize this last quarter - Thank you all for being patient! I just want to let you know I have not forgotten about the prize packs and I am currently working on them. I will be heading out of town on Friday, so I am getting as much done as I can before then. But it’s looking like the packs won’t be completed and ready to go out until December.

From the bingo prompt 11/12: create a block… I had made this a couple weeks prior. Basically it was a fail… and I drew lines then realized I shouldn’t have. So stared at them a while till I decided what the heck? Cut them in half and rearranged the pieces.

Also: reminder that using the back side of fabric is sometimes perfect. I didn’t have a light shade I wanted, but the back of the orange worked!

I like it!! The blue floral is such a nice print.

Monday I made a test block for a baby quilt and it’s actually a bit like your block. It looks simple but it actually requires precise piecing, cutting and ironing.

I’ve been making a ton of mug rugs. First for a class I was teaching, then some to add to my Christmas gift stash. I’ve been using 2.5” squares, but the scraps I had to use up for my SIL, we’re all smaller than that. 1.5” squares, that sew up to 1”. Here it is compared to my usual…

I’m not a fan of squares this tiny, but it does look super cute. And SIL will have a rug to match her quilt and pillow from last year.

My department at work do a charity craft sale each winter to raise money for a hedgehog rescue charity. This year I made some More Tissue Cases, and then decided to make some scrappy quilted bookmarks.

I joined scraps together into pieces of various sizes, then cut them down to make bookmark fronts. But I kept ending up with the nachos problem; I could then use the offcuts to start another bookmark, by adding more scraps. It was never ending. Eventually, I had to stop myself from getting more scraps out, and only use the ones on my desk.

A good technique for making them look cohesive was to pair a scrappy strip with black or a solid. I then quilted them in a few different thread colours.

This is some of my finished bookmarks. I made 22 in all, but some are saved for Christmas presents. No clue how much to sell them for. Maybe £2.50 each, or three for £6, mix and match with the tissue cases. We have a card reader so there won’t be loads of cash sales.

They are lovely! I also love the idea of using black to unify. The quilting also helps. Let us know how the charity goes!

I often fall into the nachos problem (ha ha, funny but perfect name for it!). I use even the tiniest scraps to make fun fabric, but when I use the fabric, I have left overs. So do I make fun fun fabric? To keep my sanity, I have made the decision to throw them out and move on. I have enough scraps not to have to make more scraps later! Never ending dilemma for sure!

So funny and so true. Scraps NEVER END. Very fun bookmarks.

Even though I did a test block and it worked… while trying to make the first “real” block for my niece’s baby quilt I found out the pattern is too complicated for me. So instead of piecing I spent last weekend unpicking.

I’ve figured out another way to get the same result (at least in my head, what could go wrong  ) and tomorrow my long weekend starts. Hopefully by Monday I’ll have made some serious progress.

I don’t have your Bingo card linked in the bingo post. Do you remember if you posted it? If so, I’ll go through the posts and find it and link it. If not, will you please post your cards? It sounds like you’re positioned to get a Bingo soon!
