I do all my spray basting inside the house. Is there any particular reason you prefer to do it outdoors?

I don’t want it to get on the carpets and I don’t really have any thing to lay down…although, now that I think about it, I do have some old sheets! hmmm…

I use some of those thin plastic picnic tablecloths to prtect when spray basting. Cheap. Also good as paint drop cloths, or for spray painting, or protecting furniture when painting, or…

If I had carpets I definitely wouldn’t want basting spray on them either! I hope you can make something work. I’ve only pin basted once and it was awful! I am very impressed by those who choose to pin baste.

Great tip! I have seen those at the Dollar Store.

I have finally started on the quilt for my baby niece due in Spring!

The main block is based on a pattern from a magazine, but I’m going to do different sashing / borders. In the magazine they make the blocks in a very efficient way without any waste, but I dif a few test blocks and only one went well. It requires extremely precise cutting and piecing and I’m just not that precise. So this morning I drank some coffee, rebooted my brain and figured out a different way to make it.

The finished block will be slightly smaller (2.5" instead of 3" HSTs ) and there’s more waste - or more likely, a future scrap project.

But I like this block. There will be five in total in different colour combinations.

My first finish of 2026:

I like this!! It’s so detailed, did you applique all the tiny bits?

I’ve finished block 1/5. It’s not complicated but it requires precision. I don’t normally work with such tiny pieces of fabric. Block 2 is planned for tomorrow. I think I’ve not quilted for almost all of 2025, I’ve missed it.

I think it is wonderful that you are not only making a quilt for your soon-to-be niece, but also that you are using your quilting muscles again. I love the first planned block and can’t wait to see how the next ones turn out. I also love that you are doing lots of colors. Perfect for a child!

Love that ombre border too! All those little details. It must have taken forever.

@MistressJennie the mug rugs are beautiful and your tutorial is amazing. Thank you for putting together such a detailed explanation. It’s a great resource, I hope to share it with friends who want to learn to quilt.

And I agree, you’ve sewn rows of blocks, it meets the bingo prompt.

@AIMR the pouches are so cute, and a lovely useful gift  The Halloween quilt is lovely, so dynamic

@AudiobookLover that snow globe is so cute. Thank you for everything you have done for us in the past year. Although I’ve been quiet at times it’s been lovely to check in here and chat quilting.

The witchy wares block is wonderful! The wood texture is fabulous.

I’ve given up on swapping due to the duty charges. I reckon I can probably do flat papercraft swaps disguised as postcards etc, but it’s frustrating.

@Immaculata, the block is so pretty. The purple fabrics complement each other well. I agree with your point about tweaking how you’re doing it. I’m trying to learn that done is better than perfect, and if you need to modify something to achieve that, it’s cool.

I’ve been working on quilting the Eccentric Beauty quilt that I pieced in September. I spray basted it then, but it had come loose because I stored it hanging up. I too usually spray baste in my garage, and it’s cold here. I decided that I don’t care enough about my brown swirly landing carpet enough, so I spread out some cardboard that was a bit bigger than the quilt and fixed the basting indoors.

I made a little sample of all the fabrics and tested thread colours. I was surprised by how some colours behaved, especially the periwinkle blue, which was more interesting than it seemed.

I managed to do a bit of quilting in the yellow spike quadrant but my machine is now away for servicing till the 16th

The quilt is still hanging, but I’ve tacked a basting stitch round the perimeter to hold it till I can resume.

It looks great, and how smart to test out several thread colours on a scrap piece. I might borrow that idea next time I’m quilting a quilt!

I finished block 2 today.

This thing is breaking my brain. I’ve already lost track of the amount of seams I’ve ripped out. Apparantly my brain is unable to piece together a bunch of HST’s in the right order even though the pattern is right in front of me and I checked everything twice before sewing.

How lovely they are!! Do all the fabrics have what appears to be a bit of gold metallic?

I also like the idea of testing out quilting colors. I have used variegated threads and white mostly. A blue or gray would be nice on some!

I often take in progress pictures of my blocks before sewing them up. For some reason, seeing them on my computer screen makes it easier to see the mistakes. I think I stare so long at the pattern that my brain tries to make it fit and that is what I see! You are not alone in this! But, so far, so good…it will be a lovely baby quilt!

Yes! I’m using a charm pack from this range: https://www.robertkaufman.com/fabrics/chromaticity/

I know the fabrics are quite love/hate so I’m only using the brightest colours, combining them with lots of white and hopefully the parents won’t hate it too much. And otherwise the kid will know from a young age that aunt Imma is the one with the weird style

I love them!

I have some fabrics designed from Klimt paintings that have a lot of gold! I bought fat quarters and have only used them sparingly. This might be the year I make something spectacular with them! I do love metallics!

Oh..I just saw that they are also a Robert Kaufman fabric line! We have similar tastes!
