Quiltalong - 2026

@Edel those are amazing! I also giggled a bit reading your other post about it.

Lol I love that you are embracing the idea of leaving no inheritance and spending money on yourself while you are still alive and kicking!

I do think minimal stitching just around the rectangles will be enough. There are so many good things in this post…McGyvering , naked boys, free motion, and introspection!

Anybody going to quilt shows or participating in shop hops? There’s SOOO MUCH going on in my area. I went to a quilt show last Friday (guild bus trip), guild yard sale last Saturday, heading to a small local quilt show in a few minutes, there’s a Pacific Northwest Shop Hop happening (ID, WA, OR) from 4/1-5/31, then there’s a local guild organized shop hop in May.

I’m on my way to the quilt show, then to sit and update my calendar to plan out shop hops.

I’m going to a charity quilt festival in April, here in town. I was able to donate two quilts last year, but didn’t get any made for this one. But I’m still going to go marvel at everything, and probably buy some goodies from the bake sale.

Today is the day I’m going to finish my hexie quilt from the hexie swaps in the old place, after working on it off and on for 10 years or so. It’s absolutely huge, larger than the largest empty spot in my house. I just measured and I’ll need 9 meters / 10 yards of binding!

It has been in use for years, but it will be great to be officially done. It was completely hand stitched and hand quilted, but securely basted by a longarm quilter. It was waaayy to big to baste at home, and basting stitches on the longarm are pretty sturdy. It made quilting so much easier. It lived on the sofa and I kept my quilting thread nearby. I just quilted it bit by bit while snuggled under the quilt. When it’s bound I can finally wash it which is quite necessary

I just sang in two Easter services and I am ready to make April’s block. The two things aren’t related, but it feels like spring!

Do we have a block nominated for April yet?

My scrappy binding looks so pretty it’s almost a waste to start using it…

Well, I’m 3/4 through binding and my machine was struggling, I think I may have pushed it too far… will take it to the shop on Tuesday I have an old mechanical machine and I was going to take it for maintenance soon anyway. I don’t think anything broke. I think there’s just too much dust and grime inside, and a tough project like this won’t help.

I’m halfway sewing the binding down on the front and I think I may unpick it while the machine is in the shop. Originally I had wanted to change thread colour with every different fabric, I abandoned that because my machine was already struggling enough. The stitching is also more wonky than I’d like because of the machine issue. The almost-bound quilt looks good though! The hexie quilt is scrappy with a white border, so the colourful binding is a great match.

I can’t wait to see it finished! Would you consider hand sewing the binding?

I’m probably going to do that, I just want it to be done. My Easter plans for today fell through, my friend cancelled, so I have plenty of time, and Mr. Imma is at work. I stitched the binding to the back, folding to the front, so I guess I’ll just have to put in a bit of effort to make sure the stitches look nice.

ETA: I should have hand bound from the start. It’s taking ages but it looks so much nicer. It took me 10 years to finish this so who cares if binding takes another week.

I’ve never done it, but people who do, swear that hand binding looks so much better than machine. I guess it means that you can keep everything even and steer around any issues.

@Immaculata, your baby quilt came out great! I like your color choices and that bold purple border! Don’t forget to enter it into the Great WIP Completion Contest (it’ll be our first entry!). Also, I really like your scrappy binding - at first, I thought it was a rope bowl. I can’t wait to see it on your hexcellent quilt!

Yes, I typically do. The labels themselves end up being a project on their own, but I love that I can customize them to each of my projects and I feel like they’re a nice finishing touch. I’ve mostly used my embroidery machine for labels, but I’ve also created some printable ones as well. For the printable ones, I either print them on printable HTV (great for color) or directly onto fabric (using just black ink). Here’s a selection of some of the labels I’ve created:

Creating a label can take a lot of time though, so I also have a few fabric panels that have preprinted labels with space to add information and I’ve purchased a variety of fun ‘handmade’ tags. When I did the mini mystery quilt last year, it was nice to just be able to add a cute little tag and call it a day!
