REIMAGINED Harry Potter Craftalong - Fall/Winter 2025

but wait! There’s more!

Prompt/Challenge Title: MOM #6
Project Name & Page Link: Moar Pizzelles [recipe]
Team: :lollipop: Honeyduke’s :lollipop:
Brief Description: I had three events in as many days so it seemed logical to make a full batch of pizzelles (6+ dozen). I was using ingredients on hand and while the anise extract was past its best by date I figured it would be fine since it was sealed. And then I threw in the dregs from a previous bottle that wasn’t quite used up for a bit of extra oomph. It’s a good thing I did because it appears the first bottle had lost its pizzazz so this is a very lightly flavored batch. Not my personal preference but they’ve gone over well when shared.

Prompt/Challenge Title: The Great Hall
Project Name & Page Link: Bramble Cowl Ravelry: Bramble pattern by Lone Larch Designs
Team: :lollipop: Honeyduke’s :lollipop:
Brief Description: Somehow in all my knitting I’d never made a cowl.

Also - I finished a shawl about a month ago except for weaving in the ends and now I can’t find it. How did that happen?

Prompt/Challenge Title: Leaky Cauldron
Project Name & Page Link: Red Shorts
Team: Three Broomsticks
Brief Description: As evidenced by the fact that these are shorts and I live in Wisconsin, these were obviously started in the summer.

Prompt/Challenge Title: Hogwarts Express
Project Name & Page Link: Neon Green/Blue Handspun
Team: Three Broomsticks
Brief Description: Spinning is my most meditative/restorative craft.

Prompt/Challenge Title: Great Hall (Revisited)
Project Name & Page Link: Blue Scrap “Make & Mend” Tote
Team: Three Broomsticks
Brief Description: This bag does double duty of testing sizing for a different bag, and giving a home to this awesome printed patch.

Prompt/Challenge Title: MoM #5
Project Name & Page Link: Finish the Dining Room!
Team: Three Broomsticks
Brief Description:. I will need to write up a real post for this project, but for now, I just want to post here before the end of Term tonight. Jim painted the room ages ago, and hung the new chandelier just before Ada’s last birthday. But I wanted to add sconces beside the window, a sideboard, and a gallery wall with shelves. All of which have been done!

Reminder: This season of the HP Craftalong will close tonight, at Midnight!

I may be too late but…

Prompt/Challenge Title: Staff Room
Project Name & Page Link: quarto book
Team: :lollipop: Honeyduke’s :lollipop:
Brief Description: I formatted the text for this book a month or two ago in the legal-paper quarto size. But when it came to actually make the book my brain fixated on a decorative paper I only had one sheet of for the endpapers so I reformatted everything into a smaller size so I could use it, which is a really silly reason to make all that extra work.

Dear Friends, let’s have a chat about our beloved HP Craftalong. As you’ve probably noticed, I didn’t get the points tallied and winner announced yesterday, like I normally do. And I haven’t announced a new term as being open yet. That’s because, I just don’t have one up my sleeve at the moment. I’ve been trying to carve out time to research and write prompts all month, and I just haven’t been able to.

Partly this was because I found myself unexpectedly making a twin size bed quilt for a Ada, on a very short deadline. I hadn’t been planning on switching her to a twin bed for awhile yet, and it threw me for a loop. But it’s only part of the reason. The rest, is that I’m in the crazy-busiest part of my Mom journey right now. Ada is in preschool part time, 3 days a week, and no longer takes naps. After I drop her off there, do a workout and grab a shower, I get about 1 hour - 90 minutes to either do errands, catch up on chores, craft, OR do Lettuce Craft Mod work/HPC work. On the days she doesn’t have school, I might get 30 minutes of time to cover any one of those things, before I start cooking dinner. Despite being a super organized person, with a set schedule of chores and tasks for each day, and despite outsourcing tasks like grocery shopping (thanks Walmart delivery!), I feel like I’m barely keeping up with everything in my life. And sometimes that barely becomes not at all.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I simply can’t keep running this Craftalong by myself. I need either 1 or 2 people who legitimately have the time and dedication to help me (more than that would be too many cooks in the kitchen); or I need to pass the Craftalong to someone else entirely, to do with as they wish; or I need to let it go until Ada’s in school full time.

So, is there anyone who does have the time, who is seriously interested in helping run the Craftalong?

And just something to talk about in general about the HPC… I know it has come up before, but we used to be a much bigger Craftalong. When pinkleo started it, we often had 45 active members on any given Term. We now average 8 members. I don’t know if people have left the fandom because there are no longer new books and movies coming out. If so, will that change dramatically when the new show premiers on HBO next year? Will we suddenly be full up with active participants again? Or perhaps J.K. Rowling’s problematic opinions on the Trans community are turning people away from the fandom in general. Will LGBTQIA+ folk & allies boycott the new show, the way many did with the Fantastic Beasts franchise?

I have tried revamping the Craftalong, changing points and rules to be easier to understand. Switched up themes for prompts, after things got tired over the 14 years this Craftalong has been running. I’m really not sure what else to do to bring us new members, and make our Craftalong a more busy & vibrant group. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for caring so much about this group (LC) and this little chunk of it specifically (HPC).

I know I cannot jump into anything right now, I’m in a “sort of drowning” life phase that would make it impossible to make good on my intentions. I wish I could.

What about considering a pause to the HPC as it is and maybe toss in a themed swap (like the previous Madam Malkin’s and Burrow ones) for a seasonal revisit (like shop the swap does a big once a year shindig) then once the new material is released test the waters for an audience for a revival?
One could also start an -along like the quilt, sweaters, embroidery, etc. ones that is themed to the wizarding world for projects that fit the vibe, but that maybe is tricky to describe.

Just some “first thoughts” as they came to me. I’ll think more on it.

Edit to add: Just letting it retire is totally valid as well. It’s supposed to serve you, not own you. :two_hearts:

@MistressJennie that is COMPLETELY understandable! I was not super present this semester due to my mom coming to live with us while she was in hospice. She passed early last month, and I’m finally getting back to some crafting, but I’ve also been offered more hours at work and have accepted them, so being realistic, I don’t see myself as being able to much more than contribute prompts as needed. I have a complicated relationship with HP due to having rainbow kids. The stories have a lot of nostalgia for me, but I, personally, am not a superfan of JK’s attitude these days.I will still show up if this continues, but I totally understand if it doesn’t. Thank you for ALL you’ve given to this community! It has been much appreciated!:sparkling_heart:

@MistressJennie, I think most of us remember the toddler/pre-school years and can sympathize. This craft-along has been a blast, but taking a break would work out for me, as well.

@MistressJennie You got an amazing number of projects done for being in such a busy time of life.

I’ll admit that this is pretty much the only HP related thing in my life these days because of the author’s hate, and like @moonflame I’m here mostly for the nostalgia. I completely understand if the craftalong needs to take a break. I enjoy the prompts and encouragement to craft but not everything needs to last forever.

If we do want to continue I am happy to pitch in. We could even just recycle a previous semester - we’ve been going on for so long that I’m sure prompts from a few years ago would seem new again.

I am another person that was really in this for the craftalong piece/nostalgia, rather than the HP piece anymore, and I don’t think that’s going to change. Even when I know it’s not directly contributing to JKR, I just can’t enjoy it the way I used to, knowing what we know now. :frowning:

Because she wrote books so deeply based in the idea of love being the most powerful magic in the world, I keep holding out hope for her. Her immense wealth holds her in a very specific bubble, and we’ve seen so many ultra-wealthy people lose touch with reality, when they live in a world where they seem (to themselves) to be “always right”. I keep hoping that someone, at some point, reaches her. Really reaches her, and helps her understand. I listen to a podcast called Behind the Bastards. The host is a very liberal person now, but grew up deeply conservative Christian, and he notes that held all of those negative ideas growing up. And that it was meeting some very patient and kind people in the LGBTQ community (who played D&D with him, and fed him, etc), who helped him come out of that mindset.
