Prompts: (Covering the first half of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban)
Under the Covers: Upon returning to the Muggle world for summer holidays, the Dursleys promptly locked up Harry’s school books, wand, and broomstick, to prevent him from doing any magic. As the family goes outside to admire Uncle Vernon’s new car, Harry sneaks some of his books upstairs so he can secretly do homework at midnight, with a flashlight, under the covers. Please share a craft you finished, despite obstacles in your path. Alternatively you may craft something inspired by midnight (the “witching hour”), or something related to quilts or other bedding (like upcycling old sheets, or knitting a baby blanket).
Magnolia Crescent: After Uncle Vernon’s sister Marge refers to Harry’s father as a both lazy and alcoholic, Harry loses control of his magic, and accidentally inflates her. Certain that he’ll be expelled from Hogwarts, Harry grabs his trunk, and runs away into the night. Finding himself at Magnolia Crescent, he sees a large black dog staring at him. Please craft something inspired by a crescent shape, like a moon, croissants, etc. Alternately you may craft something (or with something) that inflates, something black, or something you work on only at night (knitting while watching tv, etc.).
The Knight Bus: Harry falls into the street, and accidentally summons a purple triple decker wizard bus, called the Knight Bus, which will take him to London. Aboard the bus Harry learns more about the mysterious escaped murderer, Sirius Black. Please craft something that involves the number 3 (3 colors, 3 materials, etc.). Alternately you may craft something on a road trip, something purple, or something where you need to seek out more knowledge to complete the project (talk to another crafter, look up a tutorial, etc.).
The Leaky Cauldron: Harry arrives in London to find the Minister for Magic, Cornelius Fudge, waiting anxiously for him. Fudge assures Harry that he hasn’t been expelled from Hogwarts, that Aunt Marge has been deflated, and her memory modified. He books Harry a room for the rest of the summer, and asks him not to leave Diagon Alley, but refuses to sign Harry’s permission slip to visit Hogsmeade. Please craft something fudgey or including any variety of chocolate, complete something you started over the summer, or “give yourself permission” in some manner. Permission to take a shortcut, to buy and use a fancy supply, to take time off of housework to craft, etc.
Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlour: Harry spends many days doing his homework in the bright sunshine, outside Florean Fortescue’s Ice Ceram Parlour. Fortescue even knew a great deal about Medieval witch burnings! Please craft something you worked on outdoors, something inspired by sunshine, or something creamy (could be a food, or creamy in color, texture, etc.).
Magical Menagerie: The Trio visit Magical Menagerie to find a tonic for Ron’s rat Scabbers, and so Hermione can purchase a pet with her birthday money. To Ron’s horror, she buys a large ginger cat named Crookshanks, who no one else wanted, and who harasses Scabbers. Please find a “tonic” for something ailing (ie, repair an item on its last legs). Alternately craft with an item no one else wanted (found on clearance, at a reuse shop, etc.).
Hallway of the Leaky Cauldron: When Harry runs downstairs to find something, he overhears Mr. and Mrs. Weasley talking. He learns that when Voldemort met his downfall, Sirius Black lost everything, and they fear he is bent on killing Harry. Harry however, is unconcerned; certain that the escaped convict cannot harm him at Hogwarts, with Prof. Dumbledore around. Please craft something you are confident you can handle.
Platform 9 ¾: As Harry is about to board the Hogwarts Express, Mr. Weasley attempts to warn him about Sirius Black, and makes Harry promise not to go looking for Black, no matter what he hears. Harry wonders why anyone would go looking for someone who was trying to kill them. So please craft a project that you had all the supplies for already! Alternately share a project you wonder why anyone would make.
The Hogwarts Express: The Trio board the train to find the only seats are in a compartment with someone sleeping in it; Professor R. J. Lupin. After a few hours the train slows and a dark figure in a cloak enters. It sucks all the happiness out of them, and Harry faints. Prof. Lupin drives off the figure, before giving them each some chocolate as a restorative. As Harry recovers Prof. Lupin explains it was a Dementor, one of the guards of the Wizard prison, Azkaban, searching the train for Sirius Black. Please craft something ‘restorative’ for yourself or others.
McGonagall’s Office: On their way to the Welcome Feast, Prof. McGonagall calls Harry & Hermione to her office. She tells them she had an owl from Prof. Lupin, about the incident on the train, and has Madam Pomfrey check Harry over. Please “check up on” a project you may have been neglecting by putting in at least 30 minutes on a WIP, or a large ongoing project. (Please show before and after shots.)
The Great Hall: At the start of the feast Prof. Dumbledore announces that Prof. Lupin will be the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, and that Hagrid will be the new Care of Magical Creatures teacher. Please start something entirely new! A craft that is new to you, a material you’ve never worked with, or an item you’ve never made in a familiar craft. For example, if you’ve always only knitted blankets, take the chance to make a sweater!
North Tower: The Trio have their first Divination lesson with Prof. Trelawney, who predicts that Neville will break a pink teacup. During the lesson Harry sees a black dog in his tea leaves, which Prof. Trelawney declares to be The Grim, an omen of death. Please craft something inspired by tea time, such as an edible treat, tea cozy, or mug rug. Alternately you may craft something that includes broken pieces of china or other broken elements, or craft something pink.
Care of Magical Creatures Paddock: Hagrid begins his first lesson by teaching the students about Hippogriffs, who are very proud, and must be treated politely. Initially nervous, Harry approaches Buckbeak, and after bowing, is allowed to pet, and later ride him. Malfoy, who was not listening to the lecture, insults Buckbeak, causing it to slash Malfoy’s arm with its talons. Please craft something with a material, or stage, that must be treated with care. Such as by using safety gear, or using potholders to remove it from the oven, or with a particularly tricky step.
The Staff Room: For their first DADA lesson, Prof. Lupin takes the class to the staff room, where there is a boggart hiding in a wardrobe. He explains the boggart takes on the shape of whatever we most fear, and that forcing it to appear silly, then laughing at it will defeat the creature. Please face a crafty fear, by tackling a project you’ve been unsure of taking on. Alternately you may craft something purely silly, or something to make someone laugh.
Prof. Lupin’s Office: While Ron & Hermione go to Hogsmeade, Harry wanders the castle, eventually being invited to have tea in Prof. Lupin’s office. Harry asks why he wasn’t allowed to face the Boggart, and Lupin says he thought the boggart would appear as Lord Voldemort, which could cause a panic. Later Snape brings a potion for Lupin, who explains that he’s been ill. He says the potion helps, but is tricky to make. Lupin drinks the potion and expresses gratitude for Prof. Snape’s ability to brew it. Please share a craft where something went wrong in the making, and tell us how you avoided panic in fixing it. Alternately you may craft something very tricky to make, or something for a person you are grateful for.
Portrait of the Fat Lady: After the Halloween Feast, the Gryffindors head up to their tower, only to find that the portrait of the Fat Lady has been slashed, and she has run away. When questioned by Dumbledore, Peeves reports that the painting was slashed by Sirius Black. Please repair something that was badly damaged.
The Great Hall (revisited): While the teachers search the castle for Sirius Black, the students are moved back to the Great Hall, to spend the night in sleeping bags, beneath the enchanted ceiling of stars. Please craft a bag of any variety. Alternately you may craft something inspired by stars, or something to help you get a good night’s sleep.
The Quidditch Pitch: Slytherin begs off the upcoming quidditch match, claiming Malfoy’s arm is still healing, so Gryffindor faces Hufflepuff instead. The day of the match it rains heavily, soaking all the players, and making it impossible for Harry to see, before Hermione wisely makes his glasses repel water. Harry catches a glimpse of the Grim in the topmost row of seats, right before Dementors swoop onto the field. Harry faints and falls from his broomstick, but is fortunately saved by Dumbledore. Please create something in which you made a significant substitution, such as crocheting an amigurimi out of bulky yarn instead of worsted, thus creating a giant stuffie. Alternately you may craft something that repels water, or you can ‘save the day’, with the perfect craft.
Honeyduke’s: Fred & George gift Harry with an amazing magical item; the Marauder’s Map, which shows every secret passage out of the castle, as well as the location of all the people within it. He uses the Map (along with his Invisibility Cloak) to sneak over to Hogsmeade, where he meets up with Ron & Hermione in Honeyduke’s. Please craft something “sweet”. This may be a literal sweet treat, or figuratively sweet, like a cute toy or baby blanket.
Three Broomsticks: The Trio visit the Three Broomsticks. Cornelius Fudge, McGonagall, Flitwick, and Hagrid arrive, and begin discussing Sirius Black with Madam Rosmerta. They learn that Black was best friends with Harry’s father while at school, and is actually Harry’s godfather. He was also the Secret Keeper, when the Potters went into hiding using the Fidelius Charm. He sold out the Potters to Voldemort, leading to their deaths. Afterwards, Peter Pettigrew confronted Black, who cast a curse that killed 13 people with a single curse (Pettigrew & 12 Muggles). Please share a craft you created as a secret for someone. Alternately you may craft something involving the unlucky number 13, or something frightening for the Halloween season.
