Rose Garden Throw Pillow

Last summer I made a Rose Garden Quilt as a raffle prize at my husband’s family reunion. The fabric bundle and pattern were given to me by the very generous @AudiobookLover. It was a ‘mini Layer Cake’, that the pattern was designed especially for. My SIL won the quilt, and was thrilled to take it home. I knew as soon as she won that I’d have to use up the rest of the scraps to make her some sort of small… something to go with it.

Meanwhile, I received that same SIL in the family gift exchange this Christmas, so clearly now was the time to stash bust those scraps! How about a quick pillow? There was very little fabric leftover. Just 1 full square, and a few 4" x 10" and 3.5" x 8" strips of others, plus a good amount of the border print, though those pieces were long and skinny. When I think quilted pillow, I automatically think squares, so I tried looking at remaking one of the quilt blocks, but there just wasn’t enough fabric left do either one. Fortunately my parents had come to stay for Christmas, and my mom brought me a great quality down pillow form she had laying around. It was a long rectangle/lumbar shape, oddly reminiscent of the scraps I had laying around. Brick pattern it is!

I used the block prints for the front, and the border print as the backing. It just fit, and used up a good chunk of that scrap. The front is quilted, and the inside is faux-serged with my sewing machine, so it’s pretty sturdy. Sadly, my SIL got sick on Christmas and didn’t make it up here, so my lovely MIL brought her gifts to her. Hopefully she’s enjoying it.

I am so glad you won that layer cake! You made such beautiful items with it. I really like the style of this pillow and I love how it all came to be - from getting your SIL’s name for the family gift exchange to your mom bringing you the pillow form to just having enough fabric! What a great gift and a great story to go along with it!

It’s so pretty! Nothing about it suggests squeaking out the last of some scraps.
