Scrappy Happy Mug Rugs

In May I agreed to teach a few classes at Allerton Park this fall, including an Intro to Quilting class where will be making scrappy mug rugs. I wanted to make a few examples for the class, and for the Folk School to use on the website, but had to head out for a trip to NH, with my daughter. No problem, I could just make them when I got home, right?

Unfortunately I fell on my trip, and broke my wrist badly enough to need surgery. I was out of commission crafting-wise for nearly two months, so I was really itching to make something.

A few weeks ago, I figured I could at least dig through my 2.5” squares, and lay out a mug rug or two. So of course, I ended up laying out five of them. Since it was nice straight lines of stitching, I decided to try putting them together. It took longer than normal, but I was able to do it, so I moved onto quilting them.

I couldn’t hold the ruler to cut strips with a rotary cutter, but I found pieces that would work in my bin of binding scraps. I was able to cut the backing with regular scissors, so I was able to pick nice coordinates for the backs.

Lots of the squares came from the Scrappy Mail Swaps. I loved getting to feature these favorite little treasures.

They took longer than usual, and one is a little wonky, but overall I’m thrilled with how they came out, and that I was able to get back to creating things. Now I’m looking forward to the class in November.

These are all beautiful… what a great way to use smaller pieces of fabric. And yay for being able to craft again!

It hurt my confidence a great deal to know you did these with a broken wrist.
Seriously, these are adorable and so neatly done.

They came out so cute! I can’t imagine trying to quilt with a broken wrist, but I know I’d be going slowly bonkers wanting to craft if I was in the same boat. I spotted quite a few fabric pieces from the scrappy mail swaps and several I sent. That was a fun scavenger hunt! I’m sure the class in November will be a huge success.

I like the mini squares quilting and your binding/borders were done very nicely. My favorites are #1 and #5.

What a fun and colorful way to get back into crafting!

They all look great and I love the way you quilted them. The quilting gives such a nice finishing touch while letting each square shine!
