Sister of the bride dress

Oh my very gosh, I really am terrible, I don’t think I posted AT ALL last year!! :open_mouth: Soooo I have a lot to catch up on again (I didn’t even finish 2023!), lol, but I’m jumping straight to my most recent make as I love it so much

So when I received the invite to my sister’s wedding earlier in 2025, I realised obviously I had to make myself a fancy new dress to wear to such an auspicious occasion!

I toyed with the idea of making something convertible so I could have a different look for the evening, or multiple pieces so I could nip out and change my look, but as per usual my ADHD brain ensured that I didn’t have the time left to tackle something requiring extra thought! :exploding_head:

I browsed the online retail shops for plus-sized dress ideas and found one I loved and knew would work well for my shape, so then had to try and find a pattern to try and match the vision.

I asked for help on a FB pattern forum and after quite a few patterns that just weren’t what I was after, and one that was very close but would require a fair bit of amendment, finally someone pointed me to the Lilou Dress by Pattydoo, which was exactly what I wanted, hurrah!!

I did run into a little issue as they don’t sell to the UK anymore after Brexit… buuuut a little ingenuity and I bought my pattern

Unsurprisingly I couldn’t settle on my fabric either so I bought quite a few options, but ended up going with this fabulous “lilac moths” in Scuba Crepe. I’m not particularly “girly” and moths felt just gothic/mystic enough to suit me, especially with some moth accessories :butterfly:

I used the FBA pattern addendum, which was a godsend as I hadn’t initially spotted it and was struggling to adjust the top pattern to fit me (hubby comforting me as the tears rolled!). I also made a couple of other hacks, I changed the sleeves to be flutter sleeves, added pockets (OF COURSE!!), and I gave the dress a high-low hemline. I also made a bra to match using a George and Ginger pattern (with a FBA) so no-one would notice if the neckline slipped a bit on the dress!! :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

I’m pleased to say that I absolutely adore my new dress, I’ve lost nearly 5 stone (68lbs so far) since April last year and I felt absolutely amazing in it. And to boot it was also the most gorgeous sunny October day, and the wedding went without a hitch! :person_with_veil::person_in_tuxedo::smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Sorry for no pups in this post, but I’ll make up for it by making my next one Atlas’ pjs  :dog:

The dress is lovely! What a fun print. I agree that the matching bra is genius, especially with a faux-wrap bodice. You look radiant, and it’s not just the bright, fabulous shoes.

@Edel Glad to be back! I’ll try and be a bit more regular this time and not drop off the Earth!

@AIMR Aww thank you. Absolutely, there’s nothing like being able to customise your makes to suit just what you envisage!! :star_struck:

@TheMistressT Here I am! I’ve made 3 bras with the leftover fabric now and I think I still have more fabric too, lol, but I did buy 6 metres of it so that’s not surprising! Deffo the pup pjs for my next post, it’s time to show off my big cutie Atlas now he’s all grown

@LindyBlues I know right, I absolutely adooooore those shoes, I ended up buying them in 2 shades of purple and if I wore fancy shoes more often I’d deffo buy them in more colours too, lol.

@bethntim Aww thank you, I love that pattern so much (not that I’ve made my tweaks!) that I’m planning to make some more dresses like it. I have in mind a doggy design fabric (for one of the summer dog shows I have a stall at) and a Christmas one

@Bunny1kenobi Hello hello back to you! I honestly don’t think I’ve made a better fitting dress before, and I made a few dresses last year. I made quite a few mock-ups of the top part to try and perfect it before cutting into my final fabric!

@tendstowardschaos Oh absolutely, I didn’t drink at the wedding (other than a lil prosecco after the ceremony) as solidarity since hubby had to drive, and yet by the end I’m sure I did a little accidental flashing so it was deffo a good move making the matching bra!!

@MistressJennie Thank you so much

Aww, I’d feel rude not responding to everyone when you were all so nice! It’s fantastic being back with such a lovely supportive community  I’m planning on sewing a lot more this year so hopefully I’ll be a lot more regular posting and dropping by to see everyone else’s makes too!!

FUN FACT: When I was still in the dress planning stages, I had hoped I would be gifted some v v pricey silk jersey fabric (I’m a Brand Ambassador for Minerva, which just means they gift me fabric as long as I make stuff with it and post pics and review on their site!!), which was like £134 or something per metre (I think the most I’ve ever paid for fabric was about £18 pm!) and I wanted 4-5m  But unfortunately they didn’t have any slots left for that fabric base, boooooo.

But the lilac moths scuba crepe fabric I ended up getting [from somewhere else] only cost me £3 pm :star_struck: Lol, so I went from one extreme to another!!! I actually just ordered some more fabric from this same place, including 10kg of fabric for £14… which is apparently ~27 metres… I think I might need to ‘take over’ another bedroom just to store it all… :face_with_hand_over_mouth:
