SOCKALONG with me - Knit, Crochet, Loom

Aw man - you’re not really selling it, LOL.

I did Judy’s Magic Cast On for the only other set of socks I made - I do like the effect but agree, it’s fiddly to get started.

Hm…maybe I’ll start a simple shawl instead. :upside_down_face:

I just saw that it was a short little sock…ugh…I have a pattern that @Immaculata shared that looks way better.

I also got my hand dyed yarn order to make a Trellis Shawl…I think I will wind yarn and chill with something more relaxing as well.

Today we are taking an employee who has been with the company over 35 years out to lunch…Friday is her last day…it sucks but she is happy to be able to garden and thanks to our company policies, she will be able to retire and not go back to work unless she wants to!

UGH…the last straw,it does not fit…trashing it and moving on…not a complete waste…I learned a few things!

Aw!! It’s so cute, though! Love the rainbow center.

If you look at the picture in her instructions, that part is supposed to be longer. But if you use 2.0 needles, according to her instructions, this part gets way shortened. It looks too blocky to me plus, going down a needle size for the binding makes it way too tight.

Can you tell I really hated this pattern? ha ha

BTW, my shoe size is 7-7.5 so any sock is going to look a bit short in length.

Well I am grateful you went through the exercise so I don’t have to!

I totally forgot to share! These are for my DS2. He picked out the yarn from my stash.

And I started a pair for DS1, but his will be long, per his request.

I’m knitting on size ones. I recently bought size 0 DPNs, but I’ve been too scared to try them.

Nice! Now that is a pattern that is closer to what I was looking for…is it shareable?

I used zeros for the binding…you do have to relax and not grip too tightly…they are very tiny!

I have several socks on my to do list but still havent broken through my no-mojo vibe. I do like socks as summer projects, though, no sitting with bulky blankets on my lap in 90 degree weather lol,

They’re just short vanilla socks. I did 5 rows of ribbing and 8 rows of stockinette before doing a plain heel flap (rather than the reinforced flap) …turn…gusset…standard toe decreases.

They are lovely–the yarn really is a nice striping one! I have a go-to vanilla sock…I want more yarn but promised myself I had to use up some of my stash.

@AntBee I have no mojo for certain crafts but knitting or crochet seems to help my mind to relax and “meditate”…it is like a snowball…once I start and finish, then I want to do more…even though this sock was a “fail”, I am motivated to start another pair…lol…a much more trusted pattern!

following @tendstowardschaos lead…making a vanilla sock out of some solids and leftovers…

Finally! A sock…Not sure if I have enough of the patterned yarn to do another, but I have enough to reverse the colors so mix-matched socks it is!

My yarn obsessed cat is trying to figure out how he can carry it off and chew on the yarn…

Yay! It looks great!

Sock knitters, I have a weird question!

My hand-knit socks used to be very hard-wearing, I could wear them many times before they had any noticeable wear. And even then, it was usually a small hole here or there, or a broken thread, something that could be fixed easily.

Now I’ve found that in a short period of time, several pairs of socks (different brands of yarn) that are still fairly new, are all wearing really thin on the entire sole of the foot. I’ve been thinking about what I’ve changed, and one thing I came up with is the floor. We used to have sheet vinyl floors and now we have a tile floor. Do tile floors damage socks or is this just bad luck? I wash them the same way I’ve always done, low temperature, wool programme, then air dry.

Well, your feet do adapt to different surfaces. Walking on grass is different than walking on concrete. It could be the way your feet are walking on tile, a harder surface. Are you wearing socks more because the tile might be colder than sheet vinyl? I pretty much go barefoot all year round or put on slippers in the winter.

This floor is actually warmer, there’s insulation in it now, and underfloor heating. The previous floor was thin sheet vinyl on a timber subfloor and below that was just beams and dirt. But I guess maybe I’m wearing just socks instead of socks in slippers more often than I used to?

I hate bare feet lol, so you will definitely not see me do that unless I’m in the shower, but with this warm floor, wearing just socks is really nice and warm. It could be bad luck of course.

Well, the upside is that you know how to make socks and mend socks. Enjoy them and your new heated floors.

You mentioned using different brands of yarn, which makes me wonder if it’s the yarn in question that is guilty of wearing out prematurely? I know some are better than others in terms of durability (though not sophisticated enough to remember quite what types are suggested for best use).

To be honest, this is why I fell out of love with sock knitting. I made a bunch for myself but they wear holes so quickly. I know I can mend them, but not at the rate they pickup holes, no thanks.

It could be the floors or the yarn. Tile (ceramic or stone) is going to be harder than vinyl (a type of plastic). Differences in fiber content, fiber preparation, and yarn structure can all affect how it wears. Fine wools aren’t well-suited to socks, though Merino is pretty common in sock yarns. Yarns with looser twists or fewer plies will be less durable, too. I have had really good luck with Paton’s Kroy Sock. I also really like Targhee sock yarns.
