SOCKALONG with me - Knit, Crochet, Loom

Welcome! Love the shortie style socks…nice yarn as well!

I like to crochet and knit socks. I made a pair of toeless yoga socks probably 15 years ago that are still in good shape! Granted, they aren’t wore long on a daily basis, but I also wore them with flip flops and were quite comfortable!

I picked these socks for DS1 back up tonight. I have too many WIPs to finish and I’m feeling too restless to work on any of them. At least socks are mindless enough to work on while watching TV.

Socks are the craft version of comfort food! Mindless enough to do while doing other things, progress is quickly visible and having finished a pair of socks feels like an accomplishment.

They really are!

I’m this far on sock one of the pair I am hoping to give to my husband for his birthday- next week! :scream:

I’m confident one will be done, at least. Hmm maybe one for b’day and one in his stocking on Christmas morning! Haha stretch out that giving. Lol

Seriously, though, wish me luck. And long uninterrupted knitting sessions!

Now that’s a good idea!

I’m rooting for you, @AntBee!

I didn’t feel like knitting a heel last week, so I put the first sock on short needles and started the second. Now, the second one is past the heel and onto the gusset. After a day of Halloween costume sewing, I’m glad to be back to the socks.

They look good! I like the coloured heel (and your yarn basket, too!).

Thanks! I’m using leftovers, and the color scheme was specifically requested.

The bag was an experiment, and also made from scraps (loosely pumpkin-themed). But, it fits a little project quite well.

Hello my lovely wise folk. I’ve convinced my husband to try sock knitting, the precise hand movements will be good for him. And I see a future filled with lovely soft merino socks (I haven’t told him that part yet)

I’m going to add a sock kit to his Christmas present, so I’m wondering should I buy him a readymade kit, or should I buy needles etc separately. Any good pattern? He wants to make chunky ones for around the house, that I might fleece line. I’m assuming four needles? How much yarn will I need?

I’m assuming he hasn’t knitted socks before? I’m not against kits, if you can find one geared towards beginners. Knitting a sock isn’t really that difficult, but the shaping of the heel and gusset is pretty unique. If you follow the instructions to the letter, it’s not really difficult, but it takes time to “get” it.

For a first time, I would recommend not getting a traditional sock weight yarn, but a worsted weight yarn. It’s not as thin and a bit easier to work with. I’ve used both Drops Karisma (wool) and Scheepjes Colour Crafter (acrylic) for chunky socks. If you’re not gettting a beginner kit, I would recommend finding a tutorial or pattern on the internet (written or youtube) for first time sock knitters. In many sock patterns, the shaping part isn’t really explained in detail because they assume you know how it works.

I know some people don’t use four needles, but I think that’s the easiest way to knit a sock. People have different preferences when it comes to needles but the most important thing is they need to be sock-sized, if they’re too long they become annoying.

As for sock yarn, for “traditional” socks it’s easy - one ball of sock yarn = one pair of socks for the average adult. Some variegated yarns even have a bright yellow colored bit in the middle of the skein, so you can knit two socks that are exactly the same. For chunky, lined socks I would search for a slipper pattern. You would need a worsted weight yarn for that and not a traditional sock yarn. In that case it’s best to just follow the amounts in the pattern.

Many sock yarn brands offer free patterns. For a “plain vanilla” sock I like the King Cole Zig-Zag pattern (this one: King Cole Free Sock Pattern 2021 with Purchase of ZIG ZAG sock yarn — Marias Wool Shop they’ve been giving it away for free for years and years, I’ve got the PDF if you want it). I also like the West Yorkshire Spinners patterns generally. I would not recommend Drops Designs. I like their yarn and their designs but their patterns are written quite badly.

I also think shorty socks that are quick and use worsted weight yarn might be a good start.

Very beginner friendly short sock

Sock one complete! Now, if i can get the second one somehow done in 11 days then they’ll be ready for his b’day. :crossed_fingers:

You knit so beautifully! Looks like the perfect sock for your guy! You can do it…just start!

It looks good! Knitting a sock is entirely possible in 11 days, as long as you keep it away from cats and rodents and don’t try to turn the heel after dinner. Is Kidlet in on the secret? Can you convince her to leave you to your knitting so the birthday socks for dad get done in time?

Thanks, Friends!

Kidlet is in on the secret, she just isn’t as helpful as she thinks she is lol. I can definitely do the long slogs of stockinette (no counting, paying attention, etc.,) with her in attendance. It’s possibly an achievable goal. He’s a US size 11.5 mens so it isnt a small sock, but it’s possible I might get there in time!
