The Heart of Spring

As part of the Summer Nerd Games Arts & Crafts Club, we’re supposed to decorate a cool heart template that was provided by @LovelyMiss along with embroidery floss. Being contrary, I wanted to use something other than floss.

With summer blazing away and making my brain melt, I’ve been a bit nostalgic for the cooler temps and fragile flowers of spring. Thus, this little ornament was born:

I used tissue paper, alcohol markers, napkins, and glue to create it and finished the back with some twine and scrapbook paper.

I colored the tissue paper with several green alcohol markers to add color variation.

Then tore them into little rectangles, folded them a few times, and used a wooden skewer to shove them into place.

When all the grass was in place, I smeared glue on the back to secure them.

For the flowers, I cut small circles from a white napkin and used alcohol marker to color them. Then I twisted them and glued them in place.

A little more green alcohol marker helped color the background. With a bit of twine as a hanger and scrapbook paper to make things neat, I was done.

How cool is this?! I’ve seen these hearts in the store near the needlework supplies, but would never have thought to do something like this.

I like that a lot. Partially because you rebelled… and partially because it gives me ideas… But it also just looks great.

Holy cannoli! This is SO COOL! I have a distant memory of doing a similar technique when I was a kid to decorate a parade float. We used squares of tissue paper to cover a chicken wire (?) armature and I remember it looked really neat!

@Mountains_and_Clouds- the parade float comparison feels apt! It gives me homecoming parade float vibes now that you said that!

I love how you went rogue on this! And, your process was amazing- coloring the tissue to get various shades of green was brilliant and took it to the next level. I‘m impressed with how neatly you shoved them in, too!

Thank you!

Thank you! Shoving them in well was mostly due to having a decent size wooden skewer :joy:.

Looks so realistic! The flowers look like pressed/dried botanicals. I like your tissue paper process.
