Watercolor Plein Air Set Up, Part 1

I think this is the correct category for this, possibly even tagged “furniture” but “misc” also works…

I am trying to set up an easily portable and lightweight way for me to paint in public and out on a bike ride or something. I used to do public art events so I have a bit of an idea of how to do this, but I also needed it to be easy to carry while walking or on my bike. This is part one. I still need to make a totebag for the trays and everything.

I have an enamel butcher tray that I usually keep my painting supplies in and I bought this Jullian tripod that is supposed to go with a pochade box… but why are the pochade boxes all wood and heavy looking?! I keep my painting on a drawing board in my lap, so I don’t need an easel, just a portable table.

So, tripod:

I had a nut that fit so I tried first to glue it to the bottom of the butcher tray:

That did not work. Next I brought the problem to my DH:

TaDa!!

Now I just need to run over to the hardware store for a wing nut or something that is easier to unscrew. Here’s what it looks like with everything on it:

The tripod has a carrying bag that is easy to manipulate, a level, leveling feet, and a hook at the bottom to hang a weight for windy conditions. I’ll probably make a small bag that I can put rocks in to hang on that when needed. It gets seriously windy here. Then I have a small lightweight REI folding stool to go with this.

The paint tins and the palette all have magnets glued to them. The palette needed them on the lid as well so that it would sit flat when open.

Some of the magnets aren’t staying but I just used hot glue. My DH recommended JB Weld, so I might try that as they come off.

Part 2 will be making a tote bag that everything fits into and securing the paintbrushes somehow. I just really wanted to show this part off before I get started on the next step.

I will probably use this in my studio even. Especially while I have a furniture deficiency right now.

WOW! What a cool set up you’ve put together! Magnets can make a lot of things easier, too. I’m looking forward to seeing the other parts come together.

Love this!! That tray is the perfect size for everything. And I agree, why are pochade boxes so giant and heavy? Even without supplies most of them weigh over 10lbs.

Looking forward to seeing your tote bag and what you paint while out plein air!

Your tabletop looks like a mini piece of art. Clever and useful fix to your issue. The magnets are the perfect touch.

When my DH found out the nut was too small for me to unscrew it by hand, he made it bigger and added knurling!
