Weasel Riding a Bear: a Hand-carved Book Plate/Ex Libris Stamp

I have been transferring a lot of my craft hoard supplies from one space to another and organizing/purging as I go. In the back of the old craft closet, I found a bin with supplies for stamp carving and was reminded of a project I had planned in 2015 which in turn reminded me of this project that I actually did in 2015.

I made this for TheMisterT who has a big book collection. I had commissioned a weasel riding a bear drawing from a friend for another project for him and reused that for the stamp. The background is a notable mountain crag formation in our area.

I put together the image in Photoshop, printed it and used some kind of solvent to transfer it to the easy carve pink stuff.

I found a wood-mounted stamp at a thrift store about the same size and used that wood to mound this on and found a box that it would fit in with a black ink pad.

I had an idea for making one for myself and even collected inspiration and bits, but never made it. Maybe this year!

EDIT: I remembered another Ex Libris stamp I created and made a topic for it.

Thanks, everyone!

@wittychild Middle-aged men are so hard to shop for and then infinitely harder to make for, right? He loved it, but has barely used it. :person_shrugging:

@megwell Bahahahaaaa! Thanks! That gave me a laugh.

Aw thanks! I’m sure I used a free font that I found online, so can’t take any credit beyond the fiddliness of the carving. Which ain’t nothin’!

Thanks, friends!

@gozer That’s why I went with the pink stuff, it’s supposed to be easier to carve.

Ack! So amazing!!! I’m smitten!

Note to self: bookplate stamps need to go on my Christmas list as something I’d like for myself but also as a FABULOUS gift item!

Thanks, y’all!

@Bunny1kenobi Yesterday, I actually got to reorganizing the tote with the stamp carving stuff and while going through it found the original of this AND another one that I’d forgotten I’d made for a friend. I think I’ll try to find those pics so I can post that one, too.

Omg a weasel riding a bear, I love it!! I got into doing linography when I was a young teen and this really makes me want to get back into it, I guess it’s another thing to add to the crafts to do list that I’ll probably never get to  I agree with wittychild, TheMisterT really does get the coolest stuff!!

Aw, thanks! I am lucky that my man enjoys not only handmade things, but the ones I can make! I know that your crafts to do list is not up for vote, but I’m voting for you taking up linography again anyway!

What a fun bookplate!

What a fun and odd image! The carving is terrific. Great way to personalize a book collection, or sign a book!

Thanks so much! We have the original commissioned piece hung in our gallery wall.

Impressive! It’s not easy to carve all the fiddly little bits.
