Wildflower Bookmark

I created this mixed media bookmark while playing with my supplies. It’s inspired by a book I picked up called 101MORE MIXED MEDIA TECHNIQUES and a workshop I watched during Karen Abend’s Sketchbook Revival: Happy Watercolor Florals presented by Tamara Laporte.

I started with some watercolor monoprints. Those are created by mashing watercolor on an acrylic platic panel (or any other non-absorbent surface you’re willing to smear paint on), squishing and moving the paint with a pallette knife, spritzing the paint with water, and then pressing watercolor paper over top to lift the paint. It’s really fun and I’ll probably try a few more.

This bookmark was made from the light-colored monoprint on the far right. I used watercolor, gouache, acrylic ink, acrylic paint, liner pens, and oil-based color pencils to create the finished piece. Sadly I didn’t take any in-progress shots because I was too busy playing.

Thanks! Pulling prints and seeing the various color combos is a lot of fun. I’d seen it done with acrylic on gelli plates but never considered doing something similar with watercolor.

@curiousfae - thank you! I’ve seen videos of it done with gelli plate, but I just used an 8x10 acetate sheet. Anything non-porous will work.

@photojenn - thanks for the video link! I hadn’t seen that one.
