Winston - Wet Felted Monster

When I was partnered with @Tapestry for the 2025 Monster Swap, I knew I had to make her something useful. I thought about making a needle felted container, but I wasn’t sure where to start. I consulted my best friend, the internet, and found a really great video on YouTube that explained the process from start to finish. The video was to make a “pot” but I figured that the pot could easily be turned into a monster by adding some eyes and needle felted horns! I also added two pipecleaners that I whipstitched onto the mouth to make it poseable so he can be happy or sad or surprised or any other fun emotion.

Here’s a photo of Winston with his favorite treat - washi tape.

A photo of me holding it to show his size:

I have a few tips I learned from this process:

  1. Definitely use the type of fiber she suggested for the main layers of the body. I have one failure from using fluffier garbagey wool that ended up thick and thin and kind of bad.
  2. Wire might be better for the mouth because I used a red pipecleaner (closest I had in color to the inside color) and had to whipstitch a LOT on top to cover up the fluffy red puffs that were sticking out. I used 4 things of embroidery floss! The thickness kind of detracted a bit from the flexibility and I never did get all of the red completely covered.
  3. To get the mouth to be pink, I wet felted pink on both sides for a few layers and then did the final layers with the color I wanted for the body. The inside fibers can and will move a bit to the outside when you’re felting if you choose two colors. If you look closely at the bluey green outside, you can see some pinkish fibers that migrated into their side. It works with the blue and pink, but two opposite colors may look a bit garish together.

Now I want to try to get some blank wool and dye it fun colors to make some more monsters! You might see them in the fall STS if I get any done!

Let me know if you have any questions! I’m by far an expert, but may have some insight.

I love him sooooooooooo much! Also, it’s hysterical that we both filled him with washi tape independently. And that I made something felted for you in the swap as well (though needle rather than wet felted).

Winston is the cutest and even more stunning in person. His colors and the little details like his freckles are perfection.
