A while back my middle son asked me for a northern lights painting for his room. I started looking for some ideas when he told me that he was visiting an artist’s studio and that he really loves paintings that cover most of the wall. Then I knew that I needed to increase the size from what I had originally planned and went for a complete landscape instead of just northern lights.
After I did the background and the sky the painting started to evolve and got a life of its own. I stumbled across a box of wooden coffee stir sticks and thought it would be fun to make a wooden cabin. And since I started going a bit 3-d, I used clay for the trees in the front to make them dimensional.
Then I really wanted to add an animal because the piglet on my daughter’s painting was such a hit. For my son the natural choice would be a dog but a wolf fit the scenery better. And since I already went 3 d I added a cute toy figurine I found.
Now I don’t even know what it is. Is it an acrylic painting, mixed media art, an assemblage?
Never mind I’m pretty happy with how it turned out and my son loves it.
This is mesmerizing! Lucky kids to have bespoke art like this in their spaces. I love those trees especially.

I love how you did the wolf and the other dimensional pieces. The textured snow is quite lovely as well. Each of the pieces are able to stand on their own, but together, the painting is so striking. I am sure your children are loving their personalized art pieces.
This is so amazing! I’m not surprised your son loves it. I love that it’s 3D but the glow in the dark northern light is just the best part. As someone who is not a painter at all, I love seeing the progress pictures too. I had never thought there’d be a layer or blue under the white snow! The painted trees in the background also look really good.
Wow! As a straight painting this would alteady be amazing, but the 3d details add so much fun and dimension and bring the piece to life! Truly gorgeous and amazing. Your son will treasure that for life, I’m sure.
@AntBee the trees are my favorite, too. I love trees and it was really cool to add so many variants to one picture.
@AIMR, @Tapestry I was working on this on and off since May and it was so much fun to add more details on the way.
@Immaculata I never worked with glow in the dark paint before and bought it specifically for this painting. At first I was a bit disappointed, because the glow was extremely faint. After @Mountains_and_Clouds mentioned in a post that you need thick layers for it to work well, I added more of it until it was recognizable. It kind of changed the overall look of the sky but I like it.
I love that you added a 3D aspect to this painting, it makes the artwork literally pop off the page. The green sky in the close-up of the cabin is absolutely gorgeous and the addition of the wolf feels like the perfect finishing touch. You have a true talent for creating beautiful pieces of art!
