Look at you being all ruthless and free! Amazing! You’re gettin’ where you want to go- keep going!
Bravo! It can be hard but also freeing. Also why do I have to fight the urge to not zoom up on everything in the picture, as if I’m the one having to separate out stash from destash
I’m having a bit of trouble coming up with ideas for how to use up some more yarn so I decided to make a visual inventory for myself to see if that helps.
I know Ravelry has a similar tool on their site, but I can’t be bothered enter in all the info. (Also all the images I pulled, I was able to sleuth out from several years of knitpicks email receipts >.<)
Must use stash! Also that’s not all I have, just what I was able to pull from the knitpicks site.
What program did you use to make the visual inventory?
Um, “Right click and save image”? lol that’s just a folder on my computer.
Ahhhh nice! I don’t even want to think about how long it would take me to try to make an inventory of my yarn closet. It seems super useful after you get past the initial inventory though.
Love those yarns. I promise myself I will learn to knit so I can make a sweater like yours. And socks! My yarn stash is down to almost nothing these days. I destash & destash but there’s still so much. I’m going to a crafternoon with a friend today though, I’m going to ask them if they’d like any supplies. That box last night grew into another box & a huge bag.
Yeah I’m going to have to pull the yarn out and take pictures for the rest of my stash. Might happen today…we’ll see.
I posted here about my completed Mondrian Pullover!! I told myself that for every large chunk of stash used up I could buy yarn for a new project, but I found a couple more patterns to use up more stash Definitely a smaller project next though.
I did a similar thing with my fabric stash…took pictures and inserted them into an excel file.
Then, listed all the items left to right with yardage…did it help…not really…lol…still haven’t used them…
I am picking three or four balls of yarn and hunting on Ravelry for projects using their pattern and yarn finder. I then print the pattern or link and put everything in a ziplock. I can manage three at a time, but to do all my yarn would be too overwhelming right now.
I did something similar with garden plants at my last house. I had about 30 kinds of hibiscus, 50 of vireyas (tropical rhododendrons), fruit trees, lots more.
I included location, source (i.e., “cutting from Royal Alii Hotel”), date, a photo of the flower.
Did it help me garden? No, it kept me busy working on the database. Lesson learned.
Incidentally, I just saw some store freezer cabinets for sale. 7 or 8 feet tall, glass doors, adjustable shelves. Wouldn’t that be great for studio storage?
I’m very good at finding crafting-adjacent things to do with my crafting time…
Time will tell. I like being able to see a couple of different yarns together to decide if I like them in combination. Also, I think I might do some small swatches of some of my more variegated or handspun yarns where there isn’t an image online to refer to because it’s hard to envision how it’ll look knit up.
Visual cues are always helpful to me…I do like your idea of seeing how various yarns go together!
I like the idea of making myself ‘kits’ with my stash. I have pre-cuts that I paired up previously, but didn’t get to make the quilts I picked out for them, because we suddenly decided to move. Now all my stash is in storage. But when I get it back, I think I’ll make myself a few kits, for when I’m not sure what to do.
I make kits up for all sorts of crafting…problem is that I tend to start new ones instead of picking from the bunch! One of my destash goals is to pick from the bunch, do a wip, and start a new project…variety is the only way I am going to get anything done or destashed!
This is getting worse before it gets better. I’m so close to bagging up the lot of it to start again, ugh!
Yup you have to make a mess before you can clean it up. Keep going!
I feel this so hard right now, that’s my feeling about my whole property as we speak lol. Just bag it up and start over. Keep going! You’re on the road to where you want to go!
I have an idea! I think it will help make my little space more functional, clear out some stuff in the other side of the basement , & also satisfy my deep desire to change things around. I love shifting furniture from room to room, makes me feel like I’m in a new house. We moved a lot when I was growing up, staying still for too long gets me a little squirrely.
Now I just need helpers, my shoulder still says NO to any lifting.
Yeah, we’ve owned 3 houses in 35 years, and rented about ten more places. I’ve gotten rid of nearly everything twice, but I seem to have more than ever.
I do enjoy acquiring stuff, and I’m not bad at letting go; I need to work on USING it.
But instead, I’m bundled up on the couch…
