So… I came down sick so missed all the sales I planned on hitting Saturday. So… win? (Also a friend just told me stay home, take care of myself, do NOT go to quilt guild meetings or board meetings this week. So less temptation as I’m not participating)
I’ll watch for this group if it goes again next year. Not sure I have time to destash much this year.
My sewing machine is back! And it wasn’t a big issue, plus it’s all clean and oiled now. My first project on it will be to finally finish these zipper pouches!
My goal of ‘use more supplies than I bring in’ will be a failure this year! People keep giving me yarn, lol. At least I have room for it & it means I won’t have to buy any for quite a while.
(I had to buy ribbon & finally found the ribbon I knew I had yesterday when I put up the christmas tree & started wrapping presents. no idea why it was in with the christmas stuff, lol)
& turned some cardboard, glow-in-the-dark paint, laminating pages (bought the wrong kind for a project a while ago), and ribbon into eyes for my bushes:
I don’t know if this counts as destashing, but I’ve not finished writing my Christmas cards and I’ve already discarded three ballpoints. I’m actually glad about that because I have so many (at least 20) and I hate discarding useful stuff but I also don’t need 20 pens. I’m glad companies are sending less plastic freebies than they used to do a few years ago.
As for Challenge 2: Take a look back at your DeStash Year. How has your stash changed? What are you most proud of?
I sew a couple of garments every year, maybe 3-5, depending on how big the projects are. And sewing scraps are notoriously useless. Before, if the remnant pieces were quite big, they’d sit in stash forever. What I try to do now is when I’ve finished a project, I immediately decide what to do with the scraps. If the remnants are still a decent size, I try to find a simple project like a cami or a T-shirt. I’ve also given remnants away to sewing friends with small kids who wear tiny clothes. If the scraps are smaller and cotton/denim/other sturdy fabric, they go into the scrap quilt bin. Other fabrics are more challenging and require more thinking and planning. Small odd-shaped scraps sometimes go into the recycling bag, they’re really not useful for anything. So what has changed in my stash is that I’m making much more conscious decisions about my sewing scraps, instead of just putting it all in the scrap bin where it’s going to stay for the next 20 years.
I’ve nearly finished sewing a bathrobe for myself, I only need to do some handstitching and then add the pockets and I’m done. I’ve already looked at the leftover fabric and found two larger bits that are probably big enough for washcloths or even hand towels. It would also be a great way to use up the matching thread still on the bobbin. I think I’m going to stitch those tomorrow, before I lose interest in this idea.
Time to start thinking about the DeStash Along for next year. Any suggestions for themes, challenges, or otherwise to make it more useful or inspiring for you?
I haven’t posted many projects on the thread this year, but I really like how you do it, and I find it a really inspiring craftalong - thank you! (and I hope I will participate more in 2025)
I was just thinking today that I need to destash some more weaving supplies and books spring. I made a good dent this year but I need to remove some clutter and get down to the tools and supplies I actually enjoy using.

Maybe we could do specific stash de-stashes…a few each month? I think I get overwhelmed by generality since I have stashes of everything!
Like maybe a theme like red, but then add in Fabric or yarn as the supply?
Most of my destashing in 2024 was from moving…I mostly got rid of most of my jewelry making supplies as I am not interested in making jewelry. I need to seriously consider my clothing fabric stash…just use the really nice stuff I still like and destash the rest.
That’s a good idea. I’ve been keeping things very generic since we don’t all do the same craft but if there’s an interest we can definitely do a specific supply focus.

It might also give a much needed break to some…like if the specific stash is beads and you don’t have beads, then, take a break to continue destashing what you started!
Or maybe a bit of a choose-your-own-adventure? Two or three categories… Like, beads, buttons, or bobbins - fabric, fiber, or ephemera - paint, pencils, or patterns.
The box used to contain some cool stationery, which I’ve used. One of those boxes that’s too good to throw away, lol! Old book pages, assorted bits, washi tape, and stickers, stuck together with old gel medium that I’m trying to use up. I’m feeling quite pleased with how it turned out
