Just a note that I’ve been choosing not to list which of these manu are extinct, as some folks find it depressing or off-putting and then they lose interest, but the reality is that Hawai’i is the extinction capital of the world. A large percentage of endemic bird species have been hit especially hard by loss of habitat, introduction of predators, avian malaria, and climate change.
I mention it now because there is a kind of famous (and heartbreaking) recording of the call of the last known living Kaua’i 'ō’ō, which is one of the birds in this group.
I really like how you painted the birds in a way that follows the shape of the rocks. And thank you for educating me with your paintings. I looked up a few of the birds after seeing your depictions.
Thank you both! I hope it doesn’t seem like I’m trying to spam! I wanted to post throughout the month for my own accountability, and also in case anyone was looking for random drawing prompts and interested in jumping in. (One last set will be finished this week!)
@AudiobookLover Before I started, I didn’t realize how much I would be thinking about which rock might work for which bird, etc. but a lot of birds blend in well with their surroundings, which means they also don’t contrast very well with some of these rock canvases!
