Quilt-along 2021

What a wonderful way to display your cross stitch! I’ll have to remember that!! Love how well you matched the colors of the fabric and the embroidery thread btw!

Ooooh, I’d love to try this, but I’m not sure I have enough fabric in the same colors; I mostly have pretty small pieces. But I can root around in the garage and look! Btw, what’s an HST?

I LOVE the fabrics and colors you used for this! Not terribly surprising I guess, as salmon, teal, and cream are probably my favorite color combination!

Oh no! I hope you find a place for this soon, because it’s GORGEOUS!!! Seriously, I lovelovelove it!

Oh wow, you got the hard part out of the way all at once! Nice! Good luck spotting the falcon! We get sooooo many beautiful birds here at my place; I wish I could share them with you! XD

Oooh, this sure looks striking with that bright blue on the black! It gives it a very different feel from the lighter ones. Cool! And the pillow is darling. I love that you used your block right away! Way to finish a project all in one go instead of leaving lots of WIPs (like me). XD

Oh hey, similar color palette to Whistlefish! I can see these two making a nice start to a quilt top together.

How did the quilt block swap work?

Ooh my goodness, such lovely stuff!

@MistressJennie thanks for that YouTube channel recommendation, and I really like that field of diamonds quilt you linked. and I love that wall hanging, the way you’ve located the blocks feels like a cubist painting.

@Whistlefish that block turned out great, I love it made into a pillow

The quilt pattern she was using comes with directions for several sizes, including a small wall hanging all the way up to a bed quilt, so you might be able to do a smaller wall hanging version. And HST stands for Half Square Triangle. It’s a thing you’ll see come up in lots of blocks. For example, Edel’s heart block creates 2 HSTs, which become the bottom point of the heart.

You can view the original swap thread on the Wayback Machine here:

Basically, MareMare divided us into groups of 5, so we crafted blocks for the other 4 people in our groups. (I think a few people were in more than 1 group.) Everyone picked out a various quilt block they wanted made, and if it was a difficult block, they also offered a simpler block that they liked too, for less experienced partners to pick from. During the planning and signup phase, people shared to various blocks they’d seen online that they liked and thought others might enjoy too. Then when we got our partners, we all tried our best to craft their requested blocks in the colors they requested. Some people wanted very scrappy blocks, some wanted brights paired with a white background, etc.

Here’s the gallery, also on the Wayback Machine:

I remember we all claimed a spot in the gallery, and posted all of the blocks we made for each person. Because there were just SO MANY blocks for so many people in the swap, it helped us all see what each individual crafter came up with.

lol I remember sloth had some of the most interesting requests for blocks…I loved when she put them together because the quilt looked nothing like I imagined! She had one in particular that was like a wild stain glass looking block…I kept a printed copy of all the blocks I made for the swaps and should go revisit them…as I said, I loved the circle blocks like you got…I did Christmas ones but would love to do one that looked Asian like yours!

I marionberries offer Freakin’ Flannel Coziness for my medium challenge entry.

I finished this lovely warm flannel lap quilt over the weekend, sandwiching, quilting, binding, and a trip through the washer and dryer. I am getting faster as I pick up tiny tricks here and there. And I think these are the best corners ever! I rounded the corner point after I added the binding and before I hand stitched it down. Maybe took a scant quarter inch off the point. Made the binding corners nice and sharp. It was immediately snatched up and wrapped around my DW with kittens on top. Whew!

It was so cool to recognize your own fabrics in her quilts…I miss her as well!

@marionberries I am loving your flannel quilts!

That is so gorgeous. So gorgeous. I think I would cry if I ever received such a beautiful quilt. The colours are rich & luxurious & I bet it’s soft as anything. Like a warm hug for your DW every time she wraps up in it.

Ah @Cindy I love it!!! Are you planning on making the full quilt?

@marionberries that is just so gorgeous, I love it.

And re @sloth003 I miss her too. And btw, my quilt completion speed is nothing on hers. I seem to remember her making 4 quilts in a week at one point.

Isn’t paper piecing amazing, as is this! I love the pinks and that beak. Beautiful!

That is actually an Elizabeth Hartman pattern…no paper piecing, just various pieces sewn together…she has all sorts of animals she does this way…I have a koala and an alligator…There is another quilter I follow that does free blocks each month and nothing is paper pieced…she does all sorts of themes from fruit to owls!

Since I nominated it, I figured I better do a few test blocks! Love this simple but colorful block…I made it 6x6 to go with my sawtooth star blocks…

@Oooh and who might that be?

I love your economy bock, it’s really cute. I got a fill-a-yard from spoonflower today, so I think I’ll make a couple too. There are some really nice pieces to fussy cut.

And I finally decided to stop faffing and making do with rulers in a different measuring system (or none at all-homemade) I found these on Amazon UK and actually they weren’t too expensive. They arrived today.:grin:

Just one block for a wall hanging.

Thanks! It’s not paper pieced though.

I made some economy blocks today. Spoonflower fabric for the centres. These were a joy to make .

And O.M.G having the proper ruler a 6.5" ruler to trim a block to 6.5" my next purchase will be a rotating cutting mat-then as we say here, I’ll be on the pigs back.

@Whistlefish, really like the little pillow you created with the heart BOM (and apparently, so did your 3 year old ).

@MistressJennie, I too like your choice of different fabric for the inside of your heart block. The blues against the black give it a tranquil feel. Thank you for sharing the links to the quilt block swap. It looks like it was a really fun swap!

@marionberries, yet another cozy looking quilt! I haven’t quilted with flannel yet, but it seems like it would be warm and comforting!

@Cindy, I like the variety of pinks in your flamingo!

@AIMR, I’m looking forward to making that block. I like how your the directionality of your background fabric.

@Edel, what a fun way to use the fill a block yardage!
