What is quilt embellishment?
13 Ways to Embellish a Quilt
Quarter 3 Challenge
(July 1 - September 30)
Jelly Roll Race:
The race is on to create a fun quilt using either precut jelly roll strips or strips you’ve cut yourself. Whether you choose to make an original Jelly Roll Race quilt (you can have a completed quilt top in an hour or less ), create your own unique variation of said Jelly Roll Race, or simply race to your machine with a favorite jelly roll pattern, the challenge is to create a quilt project using 2.5" strips of fabric.
We have BOMs up until September, but none for the months after that. Please nominate blocks for our last quarter.
@jemimah, your hand quilted pouches are lovely! I love the layering of fabrics for the bird wing and the little zipper details on both pouches are perfect finishing touches! I also really like how the vein stitches on the leaf match the little zipper leaf. I hope you complete your goal of finishing a Yoko Saito project. I looked her up and her designs are so charming!
@marionberries, I’m looking forward to seeing your daughter’s quilt come together, one block at a time! Your first block looks great!
@Immaculata, I have no experience with that book, but it looks to contain a decent amount of information. I plan on using a few of the tips shown in the book preview to help me do the borders that I still need to redo on my latest I-Spy quilt. If you do end up buying the book, please let us know your thoughts on it!
My third quarter goals:
- Finish Charlotte’s I-Spy quilt
- Finish both Candy Corn Quilt Shoppe quilts
- Label and Bind Holly Jolly quilt
Nice BOM for August. And I do like to add a bit of embroidery to a quilt block. Off to consider colors.
Love this block! Hey guys! So much great quilting this year!
Third quarter goal…
Finish my crazy quilt/random block quilt and send for donation
And -I marionberries , offer Cr-r-r-a-a-zy Quilt for my large personal finish
Done!
awesome! Every time I see the snail trails block, I think of cats tails.
Your crazy quilt sure lives up to it’s name . I love that you don’t let any of your blocks go to waste!
Not exactly a quilt, but part of my ongoing memory quilt project for my cousin. I turned her son’s Coast Guard uniform shirt into a pillow cover. Gotta get the quilt top together over the next few days.
I love this! A pillow! Fun.
I made my DIL and GS bags out of my son’s old Coast Guard duty uniforms. Boy is that fabric tough.
And I marionberries , submit this as my August BOM entry.
Seriously tough! I was hoping I’d have enough in the sleeves to use as the ‘water’ sashing rows between my rows of sailboat blocks, but not only are the sleeves shorter than expected, but it has those thick patches to reinforce the elbows, so those aren’t much help to me. I am wondering what to do with the sleeves though. I don’t want to throw them out, and would like to make use of them for her somehow. A bag or pouch would normally be a good idea, given the amount of fabric and the thickness. But I’m not sure if it would be good for Jess, specifically. I could try a rectangular pillow out of them to go with the square, but it would be a bit odd. The square one above is obviously from a uniform. I think the rectangle might just look like a weird plain blue pillow…
Jennie, our beloved Auntie passed away & my cousin brought me all her plaids. She’ll get a full sized quilt (you know I must love her since you also know how I feel about quilting, & corners too) and the bits will be made into ornaments for family & all her lovely friends.
Would the fabric work for an accessory that might be used in the room with the pillow? Like couch arm caddy for remotes/ small bits and bobs? Or one of your cord keepers in a bedroom? A fabric “dish” for keys on a side table? A weighted (or non) book mark?
I like the ornament idea! I recently saw a machine embroidered memory ornament the other day which sent me searching. I don’t know if your embroidery machine could handle the tough material, but if it can I came across these two ornaments - angel wings and a heart.
Or, there was also this pillow that might work with the fabrics you have left.
I have no doubt that your cousin will be very appreciative of whatever you come up with. The uniform pillow cover looks great!
The ornaments are a great idea! I’ll come back to those, after I get the quilts done.
This morning I got another shirt pillow done. I didn’t want to use this one in the quilt because I couldn’t be certain of the material. I think it might be wool.
The front needed to be pieced, in order to include the front pockets. I’m pretty pleased with the join.
Managed to match the plaid at the side seams too.
My MIL and her sister are here to help with Ada while DH is away for work. They helped me figure out how to layout the blocks yesterday, and I managed to stitch together the rows yesterday.
Now I’m working on the sashing. Hope to have both fronts together today.
You have put a lot of care and work in these quilts…
This is just beautiful, it looks so well considered and thoughtful.
How wonderful to have family there to help! I like your choice of sashing fabric. It’s all coming together so nicely!
