Quiltalong - 2024

I really am thinking of planning an LC Meetup for Paducah, KY (which is one of UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network for Crafts and Folk Arts), so we could go to the National Quilt Museum. And Hancock’s of Paducah, lol!

I would never think to visit there! Love more “off the beaten path”’destinations.

There are several other quilt shops, and some other creative spaces, like a studio that offers craft classes and kits. And because the Quilt Museum draws in tourists, there are more interesting restaurants and bars that have popped up.

In love with this quilt pattern by astronaut Karen Nyberg. The fabrics are designed from photographs she took of the Earth during her time in space.

Now that my jewelry class is over, I was able to clear off my cutting table and start cutting out this Rose Garden quilt, that I received the pattern and mini layer cake from @AudiobookLover in a previous round of the Quiltalong. I want to make it for my husband’s family reunion next month. (They take donations for a raffle, to help fund the next reunion.)

The pattern tells you exactly which prints to use in which sections, which is helpful. But after cutting several other sets, I came to a set of 5 prints, where the pattern asked me to cut 4 2.5” strips, and sub cut to 2.5”x6.5” and 2.5”x2.5”. Four 2.5” wide strips is 10” of fabric, and a layer cake is exactly 10”. So maybe you could make that work, if you’re super careful when cutting…

But not if the layer cake squares measure 9.5”. Two of the prints were wide enough, and one more happened to be the print I bought extra of for the binding, so I can sneak a few inches out of that to cut those pieces. But the other two would never fit because the squares were just too small.

I might be able to piece together the off cuts to get the 2.5”x6.5”, but probably not the last 2.5”x2.5”. So I’m trying to decide if I can replace half of the cuts in each of those blocks with some of the scraps in other prints in the same colors.

Oh no! Hopefully, it works out, but that would be super frustrating.

Happy days! My daughter wanted to learn how to quilt as she has a friend who is expecting a baby soon. She is sooooo much more meticulous than me. And she’s very precise about colour… She’s almost finished her first top. She forgot what it’s called, so a flimsy is now a floozy in this house :joy:

Gorgeous colors and it will mean so much that she made it herself!

I marionberries , offer Faerie Garden for June’s purple prompt
And…
-I marionberries , offer Faerie Garden for my medium/large 2nd qtr challenge entry.

What do you do with several bags of donated flowery scraps? Small flowery prints are not my thing, but if you have enough for a lap quilt, why not use them. With the addition of a few prints from my stash I cut as many 5 inch squares as I could, and sewed some 9 patches with yellow sqares as the center. Then cut those into quarters. Added the sashing and border. I did purchase the sashing and binding. The back was also in the donated scraps, I just had ro add a row of 4 patches to stretch it out. Even the batting was from donation and pieced together.
I will donate to a Laps Full of Love recipient.

You took on a challenge and made a nice quilt! The little yellow blocks really give the eye a place to rest among the floral fabrics. I like the lilac binding a lot.

A lot of lovely projects! What do you do with all of your quilts? Are they all meant to be given as gifts? I like the purple cross one a lot. Such a simple design but very comforting.

Most of my quilts are gifts. I started quilting as a way of dealing with the grief of losing both my parents and so I spent a lot of time crying with the sewing machine so I didn’t want to keep any of the quilts. It felt like with each quilt I was giving away I was giving away my grief.
I have given away 18 completed quilts, I kept 1 because it has a rip in it and I don’t know how to fix it and I have also kept another cause I feel in love with it. Then I have 10 flimsy out of them 4 of them are destined to go to certain people. 3 of them were pattern testing quilts so I am not sure whats going to happen to them. Then the last 3 are patterns I have considered keeping for myself and made them with the idea of keeping them. But yes I am getting to the point that I am running out of people to give them too.

I’m sorry that you’ve suffered those losses, but making beautiful things seems like a good way to help you through.
