I am also trying to figure out why @edel doesn’t like it…it definitely is something that seems to be in her style…scrappy, colorful, whimsical…I think a kid would love it!
Ooh, I hope you’re able to get the long arm machine up and working!
Maybe you can use a less busy piece of fabric for the back to help balance out the quilt. Then you can have the best of both worlds - calm on one side and fun & stimulating on the other.
It’s such a good word!! Not sure I ever knew how to spell it though. And I love it when people learn new words that are a bit non-standard.
I think when I zoomed in, I could probably understand this definition, but it’s still lovely.
Why don’t I like it…

I think it’s because it lacks overall cohesion. The shapes are balanced, but because the value of some of the colours is stronger than others, there’s uneven advancing and receding of colours, so it looks unbalanced. Also the colours are all over the rainbow, which isn’t helping. It is a fun quilt for a kid as there are a lot of interesting fabrics in there to pick out different images.
@AudiobookLover I have a much quieter fabric for the back and hopefully when it’s all quilted, it’ll all play nice together.
I think when one makes scrappy quilts, there are so many things to consider. Color, pattern, tone, etc. I was looking at your quilt to try and figure out how I would have approached the layout. I think the yellow color is dispersed nicely…and the pink…the striped fabric is spread out as well…so it might be the blues seem concentrated at the top? So, you can see, I would have had a difficult time with this one as well. I think once it is quilted, things will blend nicely!
I think with scrappy quilts you just have to trust the process. I seldom really like my scrappy quilts, but some one always loves them. And remember, it will seldom be viewed as a whole. And, it will be loved! Everyone will have their favorite bits.
I think it is a perfect kid quilt. Fun and scrappy and full of interesting bits.
-I marionberries , submit this as my August BOM entry.
I had this all cut out, and then did not like the center color. So the Butterfly Star was born!
9" finished.
Your star quilt is amazing!
The greens and blues! ![]()
This is my favorite of the four.
It is a beautiful fabric! Makes a nice blend with all of the blues and greens and pops the center fabrics as well!
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that tiger reading a book! Do you happen to know the name of that fabric?
It’s from spoonflower! Here it is.
Oh my goodness! Cutest fabric ever. One of my themes for the ATC swap is always Animals Reading. I love this!
During yesterday’s nap time, I got borders on this baby quilt, and BOUND one of my secret quilts! (I can’t wait to show you guys that one, but it will be a little longer still, as now I have to quilt and finish the matching pillows for it. Then mail the whole bundle off.) Meanwhile my second secret quilt top arrived at its destination yesterday, so as soon as a gallery goes up for it, I’ll post pics of that too.
This one is pretty big for my usual baby quilt size. It’s 41.5" x 50.5". Hopefully it can grow with her, and be useful even when she’s in a toddler bed, or as a throw on a twin.
It is really pretty and a nice size! Now I want to make one just like it for my 9 month old great niece!
I like that it’s a little larger. So many of the baby quilts are too small to be useful once the baby grows a bit. This is so colorful and fun that I’m sure it will be a favorite for years to come!
@tendstowardschaos, your I-Spy quilts are going to be a lot of fun! I like the greens and blues. I recognize the cats in the library fabric, the same fabric made it into my latest quilt as well
.
It’s really cute! I love the double border - it really anchors the busier prints.
Thanks! I love the fill-a-yard option.
