I prefer to make them 45 to 50" square because that’s the typical size of a playpen and I know a lot of people use baby quilts to cover the wooden base of the playpen.
I finished blocks for quilt 3 of 4. One of the blocks got a little messed up when I was trimming the last time… it’s the right size, but I trimmed one edge twice, so the center is off by 1/4". I would have to start from the center square to fix it, and I don’t have anymore of the fabric I used, so I’m going to leave it as is…maybe put it in the bottom corner of the quilt.
Perfect solution. Those kind of mistakes disappear after quilting, at least to everyone but you.
I like the fabric combos. Different, subtle and fun.
I agree nobody would ever notice but if it’s bothering you, you could sew a narrow strip onto the short side with a very small seam allowance. Or just sew that side into the quilt with a very small seam allowance to re-centre the centre like.
I give up…I have no idea which one is messed up…
I like the center showcase fabrics! Looks like a fun quilt for a child!
Oh, lol, it’s none of those in the picture (the quilts are all twin-sized, so there’s 32 economy squares in each one). Here it is, and it’s not going to bother me enough to redo it.
lol …don’t even think about it! adorable fabrics!
Gotcha. I’d never have noticed. Very sweet fabrics indeed.
I’m so annoyed with myself. I was trying to be so careful about piecing the HST’s for this giant start block quilt, because the focal print is one directional, but I somehow drew the line in the wrong direction on one and didn’t notice until they were sewn and cut. (Possibly because someone kept walking into my studio “for no reason”, about 5 times that hour, and because I was try to get them done before Ada woke up from her nap.) Now I have 2 large HST’s I can’t use and have to cut another with limited fabric.
Maybe I can turn them into smaller HST’s and make a mini block for the back or something…. Grrr…,
It must be really difficult to do something that takes all your attention when you have a child who also just needs you. I am sure you can turn the mistake into something beautiful. It is going to be lovely and fun!
I just got fabrics to make that Star Block quilt that @Mvanrh11 posted! I love it so much that to heck with unpacking for a few days! I need some sewing time!
Oh, it wasn’t Ada walking in! She was napping. It was Jim.
(need more emoji options than the heart, haha)
Oh, dear…that Jim!!! The nerve…of course, he probably also needs some attention!
My studio is what should be the front room/formal living room. It’s open to our foyer and our formal dining room. (Directly behind it is the actual living room, and kitchen.) I love how my studio is so close to the kitchen. I can easily go start the kettle for tea, without going downstairs, and getting stuck there puttering around, waiting for the water to boil. I can start the kettle, then sew a few seams. Pour the water, and iron a few blocks. Or I can take Astrid out to pee, without losing my momentum sewing. And when Jim & Ada are playing in the living room, I can hear them, and help out/answer questions as needed.
BUT, my studio also doesn’t have doors, and therefore Jim, who gets restless if he’s at his desk too long, gets up for frequent short breaks. (He’s one of those people who can go do another task for 15 minutes, and not lose his momentum for work.) He’ll come downstairs and check the pool for 5 minutes. Or get a glass of water, then wander into my studio, and just stand there for a minute. I have headphones on so I can listen to YouTube videos while sewing, so I stop the video, take off the headphones and ask what’s up. He just says “nothing”, stands there another few minutes (so I feel like I can’t turn the video back on), and then wanders away. Only to do it again 30-60 minutes later. I usually ask if there’s something on his mind, or if needs anything. But it’s always ‘Nope. Just saying hi.’ During the very limited amount of time I get during kiddo’s nap.
I’d like to point out that he keeps his office door closed, and I both wouldn’t and can’t walk into his space while he’s working…
Have you expressed to him that it interrupts your flow? My husband works from home and I told him if I’m in the middle of painting and I see him that I won’t stop painting/pause whatever I’m listening to by default and he can let me know if he needs something. It helped me not feel like I had to make myself available anytime he was in the room.
I had that talk with my husband…I get that he needs time as well, but a lot of times, he just gets bored or just wants to wander around. He knows by now my look of concentration and won’t bother me unless it is something he needs to communicate, i.e going to the store, do I need anything…
It is a fine line when both people are at home a lot so you don’t drive each other batty over interruptions…I try to do the same for him when he is intently watching some sort of gripping sports event…we pretty much have it worked out, but retirement and being at home all the time with each other is the stuff that tests relationships…we have to relearn boundaries!
These are the times when I most want to interrupt & be pesty, teeheehee
I think we’re going to have that conversation again soon.
Meanwhile I turned the 2 screwed up large HST’s, into 8 smaller HST’s, and put them together to make this block.
Since it’s still a pretty big block, I am going to use it in the center of the giant Star block. It doesn’t quite fit, and will need a small border to fit, but I think it will be fun with a narrow band of bright pink, which will be echoed again in the outermost border.
This is an excellent save, well done
Dare I say, maybe even cooler than before?
