Sorry, @EclecticDreamer, I know you asked about this a few posts back. Yes, our challenge for this quarter is to “Quilt a gift for someone, or use gifted materials in an item that you quilt.” Your beautiful mug rug definitely falls into that category! So, to submit for the challenge, you’ll just post “I EclecticDreamer, offer my swapped mug rug for my small/medium/large (pick one) challenge entry” (I would just add it to my spreadsheet, but I want to make sure it gets added for the correct amount of tickets). You can find information on project sizes on the first post at the top of the Quiltalong (if you click on the “Quiltalong - 2024” header at the top of this page, it will take you to the start of the posts). You can also find the information on the different monthly prompts/quarterly challenges/monthly BOMs in the second and third posts from the top (if you ever go to check and find that some info is missing, just make a post and ask me about it. Odds are usually good that I’ve just forgotten to add the info).
BTW - your mug rug looks great! I love those quilted lines!
December Prompt: Stars
For the shape prompts, the monthly shape needs to be highlighted. This can be done in a variety of ways. For example, if the shape is a square, you could make a square patchwork quilt. You could quilt a pattern that features squares. You could create a quilt block using square patterned fabric. Whatever you do, just have fun and make the monthly shape shine!
Quarter 4 Challenge
(October 1-December 31) The Spirit of Giving
Quilt a gift for someone, or use gifted materials in an item that you quilt.
Goal List:
Don’t forget to claim your goals as you complete them! Also, if you have new or different goals that you haven’t added yet for this season, you can still post them in a new list.
Ada has a cold, and didn’t sleep well last night, so after some baby Tylenol, she went down hard at nap time. So I actually got another block done! I took my inspiration from the Modern version of the block, but used the 12" directions, with the bigger central block, so I could feature the butterfly batik. Since the bundle of batiks I’m using in these blocks are a mix of celestial prints, and butterflies, I’m thinking of this as my “Butterfly in the (Night) Sky” quilt. And yes, every time I think it, I hear the song in my head.
Hoping I can get one more late block done tomorrow…
This poor block is so wonky. I don’t like my 1/4” foot (I find it’s so small that the fabric gets pulled into the Feed Dogs) so I use my regular piecing foot, but move my needle over to a perfect 1/4”. On my machine that’s position 3.5, to the right. You have to move the needle, which automatically goes to the left, then hit the Mirror button, which switches it to the right. Somehow, after being up with Ada last night, and being over tired, I did the first, but not the second step. So I sewed the flying geese at nearly 1/2”, but didn’t notice till they were done and I was ironing them. Because it was the 4 at a Time method, I couldn’t really unpick and restitch, so I just forged ahead and fudged it. The poor block measures 11.75” instead of 12.5, so it won’t get used in the quilt, but I might make something else with it or put it on the back.
I did like the block, so I will probably remake it at some point.

The colors are so lovely, so I am glad you will be thinking to use it for another project!
I just remade the Garden of Roses of block, with the right seam allowance. It came out just right, but I didn’t get as much purple in this one, as I did in the first, so I used the green as the innermost star. Since this one is the right size, it will be able to go in the quilt. I think that puts me at 5 blocks. I’m thinking I might be able to make this one as a donation for the Cunningham Festival of Quilts this year.

It is a bit more subtle than the other but still quite lovely! I love the different shades of blue/purple…they make the green stand out nicely! Well done, you…I am still in awe that you still sew a lot with a little one to care for! You are the master of time management!
@MistressJennie, I’m looking forward to seeing your completed quilt! I agree with Linda, I am amazed at just how much you’re able to get done while taking care of a small child. I wish I was that good!
I know that the end of the year has been a busy time for many of us, so I’ll give everyone a few extra days to post any prompts, challenges, or BOMs that they finished within the time frame of the last quarter (October - December). Please post everything by January 5th.
I will get the 2025 Quiltalong up and running once I get back home next week. In that vein, is there anything you all would like to see done differently next year? Are you guys interested in continuing the BOM and if so, would you like to continue as we have done with random blocks each month, or is there any interest in having a theme for the blocks (ie. all star blocks, monthly HST blocks, etc.)? Please, feel free to share any thoughts or ideas regarding our upcoming Quiltalong!
I love the random BOM (even if I am terrible at doing). I’m excited to start new for 2025. Also… I have a plan for keeping myself on track to finish things this year. Thank you so much for doing this!
-I edel , offer improv (mostly) black and white quilt for my large personal finish.
Finally got this done, my black and white scrap bin was overwhelming me, so I did the flimsy, but it hung around for a few months, got it done just before Christmas and delivered to a grateful recipient.
I dont mind what kind of BOM we do. I had fun with the random blocks, but I would also love to do a star themed one!
I also has some other projects I would like to do, so Im really looking forward to the Quiltalong 2025
I really like how we did it this year. With a main block, but the option to choose another (similar) block if the main one didn’t work for you, either due to size, or technique.
@Edel, that came out great! I love how you used a tight color palette, but were able to work in all kinds of prints with it. Great way to end the year!
