Quiltalong - 2024

@AudiobookLover: I’m flipping through some of my block books, and was reminded of one I made for the Sunshine & Rainbows sampler. It was a fun block, so I’d like to nominate it for some month this year. Aztec Jewel. Here’s the basic version.

And if anyone is feeling extra adventurous, I found a more complicated version with a bunch more flying geese.

-I, jellybean, offer Quilted Plastic Bag Holder for my small Quarter 4 Challenge entry.

I haven’t finished many quilting projects this year, but I did make a plastic bag holder as a gift for my sister! (Now her kitties can’t get into the plastic bags and try to chew on them.) I did simple quilting in straight lines across the quilted portion.
(I printed the pattern off a while ago & don’t remember where it’s from)

Happy 2025 Everyone I hope you all had a good end of the year and start of this one.

Here are the last couple of projects I completed in 2024

Preppy the Whale Pattern by Elizabeth Hartman- Thinking it’s going to be a baby shower gift for a colleague. The crafting win for me is that I didn’t buy anything for this it came all from my stash.

This is a pattern testing opportunity. The quilt is called Cartoon Boom and I think it’s the biggest quilt I have ever made- 80inches squared. My Grandma (or as I call her Oma) has said she would like it for her bed!

Also I was finally able to catch up with my friend to give her the cat shower gift and look at the little cutie on his quilt.

I also made a penis quilt but I can’t seem to find a picture at the moment

Looking back at my goals from the start of the year, there is only one thing I didn’t complete which is the 30 blocks in 30 days

Thanks @AudiobookLover for running this its honestly been so fun to report in on my quilting and see everyone else’s wins.

The whale is absolutely amazing, the cartoon boom is awesome and its very cool that you oma wants it. The cat quilt is an obvious hit! What a cutie. And I am curious about the penis quilt, did I read that right? That sounds hilarious!

You have really made this Quiltalong fun, @Mvanrh11 ! I love seeing your quilts!

The whale one is so fun, but the one for your Oma is spectacular!

Okay, it sounds like we will do another year of random blocks for our BOMs. Thank you @MistressJennie for making the first block recommendation! That leaves us with 11 months to fill, so please everyone, feel free to make suggestions.

Here are a few sites with various blocks to look through:

@Edel, I love how your black and white quilt has so many different pops of color!

@jellybean, what a great gift for your sister (plus, it gave me an idea for one of next year’s challenge/prompts).

@Mvanrh11, your quilts look great and what a perfect background for the photo of the whale quilt!

-I MistressJennie, submit this as my LATE October BOM entry.

I didn’t have much time yesterday, but I was able to cut the pieces for these two blocks, and stitch the diagonals. Then today I pressed and trimmed them, and laid them out into the diamonds and stitched them up into blocks. I wasn’t really planning on making 2 of the block, but I realized the disparate batiks could look very contrasty, next to each other, or they could flow harmoniously between prints, depending on what part of each fabric happened to make it into the block. Some of the prints had more purple in one area, and more blue or green in another. So I cut double what I would need, so I could pick and choose from the results, for a harmonious block. The left block has all the “solid purple”, and the right block has all the turquoise sun print, but they both have the same amount of the other prints. On screen the purple seems like a weird color jump, but in person it’s a much more gentle flow. Two more blocks for this quilt. That makes 7!

They are going to make a lovely quilt!

Do we have a 2025 thread?

I see we have a January block nominated…did I miss it?

You have not missed it, I still need to make a post for it. The block @MistressJennie nominated above will be our January block.
I will get the thread going for the 2025 Quiltalong next week when I’m back home.

Oh thanks! So many threads popped up so quickly, lol…I didn’t want to miss anything!

It’s a 2025 finish but I couldn’t resist showing this:

The colours are a bit weird, it’s very dark here and I ended up using a filter so the colours best resemble the real colour. It’s not finished yet, it’s just the top. I’ve got a backing fabric but I’m not sure about the binding. Black, orange or purple?

I always hate doing sashing but somehow every quilt I make has more sashing than the last one

The pattern is Horizon Lines by Taren Studios. It’s a very versatile pattern that I can totally see myself making again.

I love the pattern! It really does show case fabrics that you like. Those horizontal lines breaks up the fabric just enough to be interesting. I rather like sashing, so a I make a lot of quilts with it.

You did a fantastic job with the little witch hat/legs on the left…so cute and such a nice little detail.

Do you have enough of the backing fabric to do the binding? I think you have enough variety of pattern and colors that anything would work well!

The backing fabric has a large scale print (black background and orange print) so I’m not sure if that would work well, I will try it though, folding over is the easiest way.

I like the look of sashing but somehow it always ends up being time consuming. I always have to rip out parts, no matter how precise I try to sew them.

The pattern’s website really shows off how versatile it is and for how many colour schemes it could work: Horizon Lines - Digital PDF Quilt Pattern — Taren Studios (the diagrams are also so clear that experienced quilters wouldn’t need to purchase the pattern…). I’ve been thinking of doing this pattern again, but with a pack of charm squares I’ve got in stash.

lol - I just drew out the pattern myself, picked out the fabrics and will be cutting out after dinner…tomorrow is our 46th wedding anniversary so we are going out to dinner at 5 or else I would be doing it NOW!

I purchased a very large quantity of Kona black fabric over the summer and totally forgot why so I am going to use it for sashing…everything will be stash…the 2025 thread will be up when our fearless leader is back from holiday so that will be my goal!

I just finished painting the last wall in the bedroom, a makeover project that has sucked up more time than I ever imagined.
I have two quilt tops and one on the wall to finish to start 2025 off. I scored a stack of flannel rainbow colored fat quarters I want to quilt up, but can’t untill I finish the others.

They aren’t done yet, but I got these two started during nap time today.

This is a lovely quilt. I like your colours. Personally I love sashing, it gives the eye somewhere to rest in all the busyness of a quilt. Yours looks great

Nice, I can’t decide which one I prefer.
