This is a pattern for 5" squares, but I don’t see why you couldn’t make the same thing with 2.5" strips. I’d just sew some together and subcut them.
Here’s the YouTube video for the pattern.

I like that pattern…I am in a slump because after cleaning my craft room, I have so many scraps that are just staring at me…
@Edel, since you’re paralyzed by choice, what about making something quick & dirty, that doesn’t matter, just to get your momentum going? Maybe a Jelly Roll Race, picking just a few colors, and diving in, without thought. There’s a simple variation, adding 2.5" squares in between the strips, and letting them fall randomly where they may, as the whole quilt comes together.
Alternately, I saw a video for a super simple Waterfall Quilt using 2.5" strips yesterday. You could grab just 2 colors of strips, and dive in, without becoming overwhelmed by choices.
That was an enjoyable video! You find the neatest scrap patterns!
My favorite quilt project is this wonky picnic quilt I made:
Sewing projects can make me anxious because if you mess them up, they’re harder to fix than just frogging a crochet/knitting project. So I made a ‘picnic’ quilt from some random fabric that had been in my stash for several years, and I didn’t try at all to make it perfect / precise.
-I didn’t iron anything because I didn’t feel like it.
-When I sewed the 3x3 squares I made together, squares of the same fabric are next to each other even though I didn’t really want them to be.
-Instead of cutting out more squares to make it larger, I sewed strips of fabric on the sides without measuring anything - just ripped the fabric to make sure I had a straight edge.
-The binding was chosen because I had enough of it in my stash, not because it matches anything.
It’s super wonky, but it’s proof (for myself) that even when you do it ‘wrong’, you can still make something decent.
Sometimes you just have to go with it and take a leap. Your first quilt sounds a lot like mine…I just wanted it done with what I had!
I think it is still a cute and functional quilt, but with a very brave story. Your comments show how much you learned from making it!
Perfect picnic quilt, who cares if it gets grass stains or spills? It’s fun and usable!
I’ve made things I don’t use because don’t want to ruin it. Silly.
It’s actually my second quilt - my first one was a lot nicer! It was for a swap partner, so I took my time & ironed & did everything that I didn’t feel like doing with my second one.
Whoa…that one is gorgeous!
@MistressJennie thank you!!! The waterfall quilt person has a video that I watched ages ago, and thought I might make that quilt, but I couldn’t find it again. You’re a genius!
@Edel
Here’s the quilt pattern I’m working on now. It uses 2.5" and 4.5" squares.
Incidentally I need more dark blue scrap squares I thought I had plenty but I’m getting sick of seeing the same fabrics.
That’s really nice, it’s got a tartan vibe to it
Blue and white is such a lovely combination, it’s always so fresh looking
I managed to complete the two tops on my quarterly goal list! I am too tired to iron them tonight, so pics will have to wait until this weekend.
I also made a couple of smaller quilted items with the scraps.
@edel…I agree…I enjoy doing the BOMs in blue and white…I finished March and will formally submit then
Got the top together during “quiet time” today. This makes 5 quilt tops from the blue & white fabrics. And I have enough 5” squares to make at least 1 more.
Those colors sure do feel cheerful! But, I bet your future projects will be different colors…ha ha…great job as usual!
I, AIMR, submit these two quilted baby bibs as my medium for the quarterly challenge of making something functional. They are medium because the patchwork took some time to plan and also, I diagonal quilted the green one in both directions…that took me longer than making the bib! But, I love how they both turned out and that I was able to use scraps from other projects. They also sort of fit the prompt of “summer” or at least “spring”.
They are super cute!!
Thanks! I made a baby quilt out of the bunny fabric. I will try to work on it later today.
My family is coming over to get me to do their taxes today. Ugh! Just what I wanted to do, but at least I will get a nice visit with them!
